Clinical Research Fellow

Position Details

  • Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK
  • Salary: Maximum offer £52,013 (limited funding)
  • Grade: Clinical
  • Contract: Full-Time, Fixed Term (up to 2 years)
  • Closing Date: 7th July 2026
  • Temporary Travel Requirements: UK travel may be required

Background

The ENERGISE-BD study is a phase III randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing a ketogenic diet with the NHS ‘Eat Well Plan’ for individuals with bipolar depression. Co-led by the University of Birmingham and University of Edinburgh, and funded by the Wellcome Trust.

We are hiring a Clinical Research Fellow to:

  • Support trial delivery at the Midlands site (Birmingham)
  • Collaborate with the ENERGISE-BD Birmingham and Edinburgh teams
  • Work within the growing translational research community
  • Actively progress towards academic career frameworks (ACF/ACL posts or PhD opportunities)

Ideal candidates: Psychiatrists with MRCPsych (or on-track for qualification), with an interest in developing a research-focused career.

Core Purpose

  • Recruitment and assessment of participants with bipolar depression
  • Engagement with NHS health services and charities for participant identification
  • Collection and documentation of psychiatric history, family history, clinical data, and psychological metrics
  • Support publishing, developing research protocols, and disseminating findings
  • Mentorship for PhD students and research projects
  • Contribution to bid-writing for future research funding opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Administrative Duties

  • Lead awareness-raising efforts among clinicians and patient communities
  • Facilitate participant recruitment of individuals with bipolar depression
  • Conduct informed consent processes and eligibility assessments
  • Perform baseline and follow-up clinical assessments of participants
  • Maintain accurate, secure databases for shared use among the research team
  • Follow Good Clinical Practice (GCP), UK Policy Framework for Health & Social Care, GDPR, regulatory compliance.

Research & Scholarly Outputs

  • Develop research objectives and bids with mentorship supervision
  • Analyse and interpret complex data to advance the project’s intellectual goals
  • Collaborate on publications or presents (e.g., seminars, posters)
  • Supervise research students in psychology/neuroscience disciplines
  • Contribute to models, methodologies, and conceptual development.

Team & Outreach

  • Engage in knowledge exchange workshops and outreach programs
  • Guide undergraduate/graduate students on project contributions
  • Troubleshoot logistical challenges impacting research goals
  • Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion within clinical research.

Requirements

Essential

  • Medical Degree (MBBS/MBCHB) or equivalent
  • Licensed to practice with the General Medical Council
  • MRCPsych or nearing practical completion (MScs in mental health research preferred)
  • Clinical experience in psychiatric diagnoses, treatments, and ethical practise
  • Demonstrable analytical skills (multidisciplinary datasets, longitudinal research)
  • Experience with biological sample handling (e.g., blood, saliva samples)
  • Proficiency in qualitative and robust quantitative methods
  • Strong scientific communication skills
  • Commitment to leading by example in ethical and inclusive behaviours
