Job Overview

Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for the post of Clinical Scientist, based in the Electrophysiology Department at City Road. The post is on a fixed-term basis, ending on 31st March 2027. The post-holder will be involved in the diagnostic testing of a wide range of patients using both electrophysiological and psychophysical techniques, analyse, and document the results, and play a key role in the day to day operation of this busy clinical and research department.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be a state registered Clinical Scientist, with knowledge of clinical visual electrophysiology to post-graduate level. Experience in testing volunteers and patients, of all ages, utilizing a range of electrophysiological and psychophysical techniques, to assist in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of disorders, is essential. Applicants will have the ability to use a spreadsheet, database and word-processing packages. Good communication skills, good manual dexterity, and an ability to work well with a range of patients and staff are also essential.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

  • To provide diagnostic reports on clinical service patients.
  • To carry out various tests on volunteers and clinical patients using a variety of electrophysiological and psychophysical techniques.
  • To perform, analyse, and document the results of electrophysiological and psychophysical tests.
  • To liaise with referring clinicians as to the type and nature of tests to be performed.
  • To contribute to research. This may involve the collection and analysis of data, presentation of findings and preparation and submission of manuscripts, as and when considered appropriate by the Head of Dept.
  • To further understanding of visual electrophysiology and ophthalmology through study and attendance at appropriate teaching and scientific meetings; to maintain continuing professional development.
  • To act as a mentor to junior members of the technical staff, to guide them through the training process, and liaise with other members of staff where necessary.
  • To provide teaching and training where appropriate. This may include formal lectures and training / tutorials for departmental staff, medical staff, and visiting fellows and observers.
  • To act as a referee for scientific papers and theses.
  • Any other appropriate duties as defined by senior staff.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • A science degree and / or relevant experience.
  • A postgraduate science degree or equivalent.

State Registration

Essential criteria

  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist

Experience

Essential criteria

  • A minimum of 3 years clinical experience in visual electrophysiology testing
  • Extensive experience in visual pathway testing of adult and paediatric patients

Desirable criteria

  • Examination and care of patients within the healthcare environment
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of visual disorders and relevance to clinical visual electrophysiology
  • Understanding of visual disorders and relevance to ophthalmic imaging

Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Good presentation, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with a wide range of patients and staff.
  • Computer literacy in spreadsheet, database and word processing
  • Ability to work individually and as a team member.

Desirable criteria

  • Organisational ability
  • Advanced keyboard skills
  • Manual Dexterity

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria

  • Ability to communicate and negotiate with a wide range of staff, senior managers and patients, both internal and external to the trust.
