The Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, highly motivated HCPC-registered Clinical Scientist to join the Scottish Microbiology Laboratories (SMiRL) at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
We welcome applications from:
- HCPC-registered Clinical Scientists
- Individuals eligible to start HCPC registration (e.g., those on the STP Scientist Training Programme)
Core Responsibilities
Please note: Key duties may be adjusted following further consultation and all duties are subject to change due to the novel nature of our service.

Specialist Laboratory Testing:
- Develop and deliver highly specialized phenotypic and molecular microbiology techniques for reference laboratory testing
- Provide expert interpretation of results, including antimicrobial resistance surveillance, vaccine surveillance, and outbreak management

Quality Assurance & Innovation:
- Contribute to quality control and assurance of laboratory methods to ensure accuracy and reliability
- Lead or support service development, introducing new diagnostics technologies (e.g., Whole Genome Sequencing)

Research & Clinical Audits:
- Participate in research, clinical audits, and molecular development projects
- Validate and report on complex laboratory findings, offering specialist clinical advice

Training & Mentorship:
- Train, teach, and support development of medical, technical, and scientific staff

Collaborative Delivery:
- Work with multidisciplinary teams in service delivery and operational activities
Location & Working Pattern
Location: New Lister Building, Glasgow Royal Infirmary Hours: Monday to Friday Employment Type: Permanent (Full-Time)
Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Experience

Undergraduate:
An Upper Second (2:1) or First-Class Honours degree in a relevant science, such as:
- Medical Microbiology
- Clinical Science / Biology with a specialism in microbiology

Postgraduate Qualification:
- A Master’s Degree (MSc) in Medical Microbiology, Microbial Genomics, or a related field (or equivalent qualifications)

Professional Training:
- Completion of the nationally accredited STP Scientist Training Programme (for those pursuing full HCPC registration)
- Eligibility for HCPC Registration as a Clinical Scientist (competency run-in acceptable for early-career applicants)
Additional Considerations
- Experience in applying molecular techniques (e.g. PCR, Whole Genome Sequencing) will be advantageous
- Knowledge of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, molecular diagnostics and budget oversight is valued
