Band 7 ED/MIU Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist – East of BCUHB
About the Role
Are you a highly motivated and experienced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist looking for a new challenge or career progression into a Band 7 post? A rare opportunity has arisen to join the Physiotherapy Team in the East of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) as an ED/MIU Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist.
This role delivers advanced clinical expertise in assessing, diagnosing, and managing acute musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries across:
- Emergency Department (ED)
- Minor Injury Unit (MIU)
- Fracture clinic
- MSK outpatient services
The post holder will:
- Act as a key specialist practitioner, providing high-quality, patient-centred care
- Work with Orthopaedic, ED, and multidisciplinary teams to refine integrated care pathways
- Manage a complex clinical caseload, including first-contact physiotherapy assessments, triage, and referral pathways
- Ensure timely and effective patient management across both urgent and elective care
Within BCUHB, you can progress into careers as Band 8A (Clinical Advanced Practitioner) with opportunities for service improvement, regular supervision, and extensive training.
Welsh language skills are desirable, but both Welsh and English speakers are welcome to apply.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Patient Care
- Deliver specialist physiotherapy assessment and management for patients with acute MSK trauma in ED/MIU clinics, including:
- Identification of non-MSK and red flag pathologies
- Provide first-contact assessments and one-stop physiotherapy services for:
- Soft tissue injuries
- Trauma follow-ups
- Manage ongoing rehabilitation in MSK outpatient settings (complex caseloads)
- Lead MSK drop-in clinics, supporting:
- Acute fractures
- Post-operative care
- Acute injury management

Extended Scope & Specialist Practice
- Utilise advanced practice skills, including:
- Non-medical requesting (e.g., imaging, blood tests)
- Prescribing (PGDs) / non-medical prescribing
- Support scaphoid clinics (as required)
- Contribute to specialist MSK services with clinical expertise
Education & Mentorship
- Train physiotherapy colleagues and ED/MIU staff in acute MSK/trauma management
- Supervise junior staff and participate in service development initiatives
- Develop care pathways and engage in quality improvement projects
Research & Evidence-Based Practice
- Participate in clinical audit, research activity, and evidence-based practice
- Develop patient information materials and aid in research recruitment

Person Specification
Qualifications (Essential)
- Degree or Graduate Diploma in Physiotherapy
- HCPC-registered
- Working towards or completed a Masters-level postgraduate qualification
- Extended scope physiology skills (or actively pursuing)
- Evidence of up-to-date CPD activity

Experience (Essential)
- Senior physiotherapist with extensive experience in speciality
- Clinical education in musculoskeletal practice
- Teaching experience at postgraduate level
- Multidisciplinary team working (MDT) demonstrated credibility
- Audit experience to refine practice

- Ability to perform manual handling tasks in line with Health Board policies
- Capable of sustaining physical demands (moderate-to-high workload)

Knowledge (Essential)
- In-depth specialised clinical expertise in musculoskeletal conditions
- Recent study in MSK physiotherapy (or equivalent benchmark)
- Ethical and legal understanding of professional practice
- Clinical governance and risk assessment knowledge applied daily
- Broad knowledge of health legislation
