Clinical Specialist Sonographer
Senior Sonographer – Obstetrics/General Ultrasound
About the Role and Department
The ultrasound department at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (ESHT) is run by a friendly team of 19 sonographers who rotate between General, Obstetrics, and Vascular departments. Supported by 12 cross-site Ultrasound Radiology Assistants, the service operates across three accessible sites—Eastbourne District General Hospital, Conquest Hospital (Raleigh Campus), and the brand-new state-of-the-art Community Diagnostic Centre in Bexhill.
We provide a diverse range of services, including:
- Out-patient and in-patient ultrasound appointments (acute and elective care)
- One-stop clinics, such as:
- Early Pregnancy Assessment
- Gynaecological (Gynae) examinations
- Breast Triple Assessment
- Obstetric ultrasonography (supervised queries by obstetricians)
Equipped with 18 high-end ultrasound machines, the Trust maintains a timely replacement scheme. We also utilise two advanced reporting systems:
- SECTRA PACS (for image storage and viewing)
- ViewPoint 6 (for detailed report generation)
Specialist Training & Support
The department fosters specialist training in key areas:
- Breast Imaging (including breast interventions such as biopsy guidance)
- Head & Neck (including ocrbits, prenatal cranials)
- Paediatrics (detailed joint assessments, baby hips, cranial ultrasounds)
- Musculoskeletal (MSK) (including interventional procedures)
- Small parts (e.g., thyroid, eye)
Opportunities for employee growth include:

Additionally, registrar, sonographer, and radiographer students are actively supported in training.

Key Responsibilities
Essential

Carry out a comprehensive range of ultrasound examinations, including:
- Abdominal (general)
- Obstetrics (standard and Nuchal Translucency scanning)
- Gynaecology (first-trimester to.second-trimester screening)
- Vascular imaging (such as carotid duplex and DVT scanning)
- Small parts (e.g., thyroid, scrotal, breast)

Work independently to issue accurate and detailed ultrasound reports for investigation planning or diagnostic follow-up.

Operate within departmental quality protocols, ensuring patient dispositions (e.g., advising on serial scans, emerging concerns) are safely escalated to clinicians.

Actively upgrade clinical knowledge via local and external learning CPD schemes.

Support de novo sonography training (for new recruits, trainees, and registrars).
Additional Duties (as required)
- Participation in Clinical audit and service improvement projects.
- Contribute to departmental teaching (e.g., student support, CPD sessions).
- Assume extended managerial and administrative roles with ability-to-perform demonstrated ground.
Frame of Work
- Standard working hours: Monday–Friday (with flexibility for weekends and evenings, depending on team coverage).
- Flexible arrangements available: Many sonographers work compressed hours (e.g., two 3/4-day weeks).
- Rotational shifts across Eastbourne, Lewes (Conquest), and Bexhill (CDC).

Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
- A approved Postgraduate CASE-accredited qualification in ultrasound (examples: Diploma, PgDip, or MSc in medical ultrasound from institutions such as the DMU).
- UK Health Professions Council (HPC) registration as a radiographer, or:
- NMC registration as a midwife or nurse.
Experience & Skills
- Proficiency in obstetric/gynecologic ultrasound, including 24-week routines and third-trimester monitoring.
- Familiarity with Doppler techniques (e.g., intrauterine growth restriction, saTransfer conversion).
- Ability to communicate results effectively with pregnant patients and referring clinicians.
