Clinical Psychologist (Lead Role) – Inpatient Psychology Service

About the Role
An exciting opportunity exists within NLFT Unplanned Care Inpatient Psychology Service, based at Highgate Mental Health Centre West. We are an expanding team of psychologists and Clinical and Associate Psychiatric Nurses (CAPs) providing support across inpatient services in a trauma-informed, psychologically minded environment.
This role enables you to drive improved psychological care for adult service users in an acute mental health setting. As the lead psychologist for two wards—one adult treatment ward and one Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)—you will deliver key Expert by Experience skills and foster psychological interventions vital for comprehensive in-patient support.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Ward Psychology
- Spearhead psychological assessments, brief formulation-driven interventions, and group work within multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs).
- Develop and sustain systemic interventions to support families and significant others of service users.
- Provide consultation, reflection, and training to clinical teams, enhancing trauma-informed care practices.

Service Development & Research
- Lead initiatives to refine psychological care, includingTrauma-Informed Approaches across wards.
- Engage in audit, policy, and service quality improvement, encouraging psychological research within the NHS workforce.
- Collaborate with inpatient psychology colleagues on clinical initiatives, including contributions to shared service development projects.
Requirements
Must-Have Qualifications & Experience
- Registered or near-registered Clinical/Counselling Psychologist (or with a preceptorship opportunity available for 2026 qualifiers).
- Proven knowledge of acute mental health care, including trauma-informed settings and psychological interventions for those in distress.
- Excellent clinical decision-making and experience of psychotherapeutic frameworks (e.g., CBT/Trauma-focused interventions).
- Demonstrated capability in MDT working with nursing, psychiatric, and social care teams.
Supportive Attributes
- High personal resilience, adaptability, and a proactive attitude to flexible working arrangements.
- Experience (or interest) in preceptorship models for established leadership/clinical growth within psychology services.
