Role Purpose

The Cloud Delivery Engineer is a pivotal position within the Cloud Services Delivery team, taking a solution from design to reality. Given the wide variety of Azure services and technologies, the Delivery Engineer is required to have:

  • A broad knowledge and understanding of common Azure services
  • Hands-on experience to achieve successful outcomes to a high level of quality

While designs provide a roadmap and a general framework, the Delivery Engineer’s adaptable, inventive, and collaborative mindset is indispensable for overcoming the technical and operational hurdles common when delivering novel solutions.

With extensive Azure services and technologies, you’ll have the opportunity to hone your skills and push the boundaries of what’s possible in the cloud ecosystem.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the build of innovative customer solutions to a high standard of implementation and technical governance
  • Implement, migrate, and optimise customer workloads using a wide range of Azure-native technologies, aligned to Cloud Adoption Framework principles
  • Contribute to low-level architecture designs for public cloud solutions, focusing on robustness, scalability, security, and cost efficiency
  • Develop a thorough understanding of SCC’s public cloud managed services and Microsoft’s Azure services
  • Work closely with aligned Agile Delivery Managers, Technical Architects, and other internal stakeholders to support a right-first-time approach to delivery
  • Develop strong customer relationships and ensure SCC are always perceived as valued advisors and technical experts
  • Continuously improve technical delivery methodology, automating where possible using IaC and other methodologies to ensure consistency and integrity
  • Challenge norms and existing process where tangible improvements can be identified
  • Ensure all designs and implementations follow information security best practices and all information assurance compliance requirements
  • Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in public and hybrid cloud environments
  • Pursue training and certifications to enhance skills and knowledge
  • Support the success and development of others in the team

Skills and Experience

Infrastructure Skills

  • Strong experience with a variety of Azure infrastructure services, including:
    • Virtual machines
    • Storage
    • Backup
    • Management
    • Databases
    • Azure Arc
    • Virtual Desktop
  • Relevant Microsoft certification to evidence skills (highly desirable)

Networking Skills

  • Ability to manage VM and cloud tenancy networking, including high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) configurations
  • Experience implementing S2S VPN (Site-to-Site VPN)

Service Onboarding & Migration

  • Experience onboarding and migrating customers to public cloud services
  • Familiarity with tools such as Azure Migrate

Platform as a Service (PaaS) Skills

  • Knowledge and experience of Azure PaaS, including SQL, App Service, Kubernetes (desirable)

Security Skills

  • Strong background in security-related technologies:
    • Azure Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory)
    • Defender for Cloud (DfC)
    • Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)
    • Azure Lighthouse (enhanced Cloud Management)
  • Strong ‘security-first’ mindset

Process Orientation & Considerations

  • Logical thinking and process orientation
  • Ability to understand the customer’s journey
  • Capable of taking sole responsibility for realising the implementation of a solution from architect-consolidated designs

Documentation

  • Contribution to existing low-level architectural designs and configuration documentation, ensuring results are:
    • High-quality
    • Clear
    • Consistent
    • Comprehensive

Scripting and Automation

  • Experience with a variety of scripting languages and automation tools
  • Familiarity with primary tools Terraform, Bicep, PowerShell

Additional Requirements

  • Current holder of security clearance or the ability to obtain it
  • Attitude of flexibility – comfortable with evolving solutions and finding the most effective paths to implementation

Soft Skills

  • Strong team working, communications, and collaboration skills

  • Analytical mindset – ability to find solutions to problems and work in teams when required
