AWS Cloud Engineer

We’re looking for an exceptional AWS Cloud Engineer to join our engineering team and help drive our cloud strategy. Your role will focus on designing, deploying, and managing AWS infrastructures, ensuring reliability, security, and scalability for our world-class cloud platform.
As an AWS Specialist, you will:
- Work closely with the Cloud Engineering Manager and wider technical teams to support digital transformation and strategic cloud initiatives.
- Apply expertise to architecture, automation, and optimisation to build scalable, cost-effective cloud solutions.
- Develop and maintain best-in-class cloud environments, supporting our partnership ecosystem while ensuring our own operations remain secure, performant, and future-proof.
Possession of full UK Right to Work must be provided. Due to regulatory constraints, we can only consider candidates legally entitled to work in the UK. This role may be based either from our Hessle or Prudhoe offices (3 days per week, with 2 remote).
About the Role
The Cloud Engineer (AWS) is a critical position that ensures the security, scalability, and cost-effectiveness of our AWS infrastructure.
- Monitor and manage cloud environments, enhancing performance and efficiency.
- Implement and enforce security policies, governance, and compliance to ensure adherence to industry best practices.
- Automate cloud operations to optimise workflows and reduce manual intervention.
- Support cloud migration projects, integrating our on-premises systems.
- Provide 3rd line cloud support, acting as an escalation point for complex AWS-related issues.

Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
Design & Deployment
- Design high-performance AWS architectures using EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, and Lambda.
- Develop and deploy secure, scalable cloud solutions to support Giacom’s operational needs.
Operational Excellence & Automation
- Manage and optimise AWS environments to ensure performance, security, and cost-efficiency.
- Implement and maintain cloud governance, security policies, and compliance frameworks.
- Automate cloud operations using CloudFormation, Terraform, and AWS CLI.
- Monitor AWS services and respond to incidents, performance issues, and service disruptions.
Documentation & Collaboration
- Maintain accurate cloud documentation, including architecture diagrams, procedures, and runbooks.
- Collaborate with IT teams and business stakeholders to create solutions aligned with strategic goals.
- Stay up-to-date with AWS developments and recommend process improvements and new cloud services.
Support & Escalation
- Provide 3rd line cloud support as an escalation point for critical AWS issues.
- Lead troubleshooting sessions and apply hands-on problem-solving to deliver fault-free cloud services.
Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in designing, deploying, and managing AWS environments.
- Strong understanding of core AWS services (e.g. EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch).
- Hands-on experience with cloud automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) (e.g. CloudFormation, Terraform).
- Proficiency in scripting and automation (e.g. Python, Bash, AWS CLI).
- Knowledge of cloud security, identity management, and compliance frameworks.
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills, ensuring operational stability.

Desirable Skills
- Experience with container services (e.g. ECS, EKS, Docker).
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices in AWS.
- Understanding of monitoring and logging tools (e.g. CloudWatch, ELK Stack).
- Experience with hybrid cloud environments and cloud migration strategies.
- Knowledge of ITIL service management and best practices.
- Experience in optimising AWS costs and identifying wasteful spend.
