Cloud Engineer (AWS)

About the Role

The Cloud Engineer (AWS) is responsible for designing, deploying, and managing Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure across the organisation. This role ensures that cloud environments are secure, scalable, and cost-effective, supporting both day-to-day operations and long-term strategic initiatives.

Working closely with the Cloud Engineering Manager and other technical teams, the AWS Specialist will:

  • Provide expert guidance on cloud architecture, automation, and optimisation.
  • Play a central role in enabling digital transformation, improving service delivery, and maximising AWS investments.

Location: This role may be based in either our Hessle or Prudhoe offices, with 3 days per week on-site and 2 remote.


What You’ll Be Doing

  • Design and implement AWS infrastructure solutions, including:
    • EC2
    • S3
    • RDS
    • VPC
    • IAM
    • Lambda
  • Manage and optimise AWS environments for performance, security, and cost-efficiency.
  • Implement and maintain cloud governance, security policies, and compliance frameworks.
  • Automate cloud operations using tools such as:
    • CloudFormation
    • Terraform
    • AWS CLI
  • Support cloud migration projects and integration with on-premise systems.
  • Monitor cloud services, including troubleshooting and resolving incidents and performance issues.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of cloud architecture, configurations, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with IT teams to deliver cloud-based solutions aligned with business needs.
  • Provide 3rd-line support and act as the escalation point for AWS-related issues.
  • Stay up-to-date with AWS developments and recommend improvements or new services.
  • Ensure adherence to:
    • IT security policies
    • Data protection regulations
    • Industry best practices

Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

Essential Skills:

✔ Proven experience in designing, deploying, managing AWS environments. ✔ Strong knowledge of core AWS services, including:

  • EC2
  • S3
  • RDS
  • VPC
  • IAM
  • CloudWatch ✔ Experience with cloud automation and Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation, Terraform). ✔ Proficiency in scripting and automation (Python, Bash, AWS CLI). ✔ Understanding of:
  • Cloud security
  • Identity management
  • Compliance ✔ Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Desirable Skills:

🔹 Experience with container services (ECS, EKS, Docker). 🔹 Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices in AWS. 🔹 Knowledge of monitoring and logging tools (CloudWatch, ELK Stack). 🔹 Exposure to hybrid cloud environments and cloud migration strategies. 🔹 Understanding of ITIL service management practices. 🔹 Experience in cost management and optimisation in AWS.
