Role Overview
The Cloud Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, and continual improvement of the organisation's hybrid IT infrastructure, leading the delivery of a cloud-first strategy across Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, and core on-premise platforms. The role ensures infrastructure services are secure, resilient, scalable, and cost-effective, while supporting innovation and enabling the organisation's wider digital transformation objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud Infrastructure & Platform Engineering
- Own, administer, and optimise Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 services
- Drive automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) adoption
- Lead cloud migrations, deployments, and modernisation initiatives
- Monitor and improve performance, security, and cost efficiency
On-Premise & Hybrid Infrastructure
- Maintain core on-premise infrastructure including servers, storage, and networking
- Ensure seamless hybrid connectivity between on-premise and cloud environments
- Manage Windows Server and core services including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy

Networking & Connectivity
- Support LAN/WAN infrastructure, firewalls, and VPN connectivity.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex connectivity issues across hybrid environments.
- Ensure secure and reliable access to services
Security, Resilience & Compliance
- Implement and maintain security best practices across all platforms
- Ensure robust backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity capabilities
- Support compliance with standards such as ISO 27001 and Cyber Essentials
- Drive improvements in identity security, patching, and threat protection
Service Delivery & Support
- Provide 2nd/3rd line escalation support for infrastructure and cloud services
- Act as a technical lead, mentoring colleagues and supporting architectural decisions
- Maintain documentation, runbooks, and technical standards
- Support service performance through SLAs, KPIs, and reporting
Projects & Continuous Improvement
- Deliver infrastructure and cloud projects (migrations, upgrades, modernisation)
- Support adoption of cloud-first and automation strategies
- Identify opportunities to improve performance, resilience, and cost efficiency
- Contribute to IT roadmaps and technical standards

Person Specification
Essential Experience & Skills
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure (IaaS, PaaS fundamentals)
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365 administration
- Experience with identity and access management (Entra ID / Azure AD)
- Solid understanding of Windows Server and hybrid infrastructure
- Knowledge of networking fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, VPNs)
- Experience supporting hybrid cloud environments
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
Desirable
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, Bicep)
- Experience with monitoring tools (Azure Monitor, Log Analytics)
- Familiarity with endpoint management such as Intune
- Scripting/automation skills (PowerShell)
- Understanding of ITIL frameworks
