CMHT Pharmacy Technician - INTERNAL

Community Pharmacy Technician – Band 5 (Fixed Term/Secondment) West Community Mental Health Team, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board


ESSENTIAL NOTICE Only applications from staff currently employed by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board will be accepted.

This is a fixed-term/secondment role (9 months, until 03/31/2027) due to funding. Prior written approval from your current line manager is mandatory before applying.


About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for a Band 5 Pharmacy Technician to support the Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) in delivering a specialised medicines management service. Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to optimise patient medications (e.g., clozapine, lithium, ADHD, depot antipsychotics).
  • Conducting medication history reviews and resolving discrepancies.
  • Identifying and mitigating pharmaceutical risks (e.g., polypharmacy, adherence issues).
  • Welsh-speaking ability is desirable (English/Welsh applicants welcome).

Key Responsibilities

Medicines Management & Monitoring

  • Supervise clozapine dispensing in the dispensary and troubleshoot prescribing issues.
  • Manage depot antipsychotic stock across CMHT sites, including:
    • Polarspeed and first-generation depot administration.
    • Decadminstering allergenic drugs via BCUHB guidelines.
    • Reducing avoidable RED (hospital-managed) prescriptions.
  • Ensure stock facilities comply with BCUHB protocols.
  • Facilitate shared care agreements between CMHT/PCT/GP for stable diagnoses.

Patient-Centric Support

  • Perform EMIS compliance checks (e.g., clozapine monitoring bloods, lithium levels).
  • Review psychiatric/physical health monitoring (e.g., HCAT, antidepressants).
  • Offer medication counselling (e.g., clozapine adherence, lithium side effects).
  • Assist with lithium emissions and dosing adherence strategies.

Specialist Review Processes

  • Safely transition patients from inpatient mental health units/liaison services.
  • Coordinate medication reconciliations during transfers/discharges.
  • Operate under formulary and RED drug pathways, communicating with GPs.
  • Check Valproate “prevent” compliance (adjunctive therapy for bipolar disorder).

Qualifications & Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician (GPhC) with a Level 3 NVQ in Pharmacy.
  • Proven experience in mental health medicines management.

  • Competency in ZTAS registration pathways.
  • Fluency in Welsh for service integration.
