Job Description

CMM Inspector – What Does The Role Involve?

The primary purpose of the position is to:

  • Ensure components are inspected to drawing tolerances and specifications, efficiently and accurately
  • Maintain high attention to detail
  • Deploy robust inspection practices and techniques for all customer products
  • Fully support the manufacturing process and prevent production delays
  • Work 39 hours per week according to the following shift pattern:
    • Monday to Thursday 6.45am to 3.30pm, unpaid break at 12.30pm–1.00pm
    • Friday 7.00am to 1.00pm, unpaid break at 12.30pm–1.00pm

Key Responsibilities

  • Part inspection:

    • Use CMM Coordinate Measuring Machine or manual inspection methods to ensure components meet specifications
    • Adjust CMM programs and multiset CMMs when required
  • Process inspection activities:

    • Perform in-process, first-off and final inspection activities
    • Evaluate conformance to engineering requirements
  • Quality compliance:

    • Escalate all quality-related matters to the Quality or Production Team for resolution
    • Maintain a strong quality-first outlook in all inspection activities and decision-making
  • Documentation & reporting:

    • Ensure accurate maintenance of all inspection documentation
    • Update processes, such as PCPs, Critical Feature Requirements and FAIR Data
  • Nonconformities & corrective action:

    • Raise nonconforming material/products promptly
    • Support investigations and corrective action activities
  • Supplier & manual inspection support:

    • Review supplier specifications and documentation
    • Conduct manual inspection activities
  • Program proving:

    • Develop and prove-out CMM programs

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Right to live and work in the UK (essential)
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a high-precision manufacturing environment
  • Proficient in alternate controls software to generate CMM inspection programs
  • Previous experience in a similar CMM inspector role
  • Clear understanding of CMM Best Practice techniques
  • In-depth knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Ability to work to high levels of precision and accuracy
  • Strong grasp of drawing tolerances and technical specifications
  • IT proficiency: Experience using Microsoft Word & Excel

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Working knowledge of Mitutoyo CMM’s using the COSMOS Platform
  • Familiarity with PC-DMIS platform (preferred but not mandatory)
  • Security clearance (preferred but not mandatory)

Qualifications

While not strictly mandatory, the following would be highly beneficial:

  • Certified CMM Training or Programmer/Operator training (essentially required)
  • ONC/HNC level experience or equivalent (desirable)
  • Certified Internal Auditor qualification
  • Full apprenticeship or time-served training in machining or relevant skills (desirable)
  • Experience in adjusting/writing CMM programs (desirable)
