Co-Operative Income Officer – Holliday Street, Birmingham
£31,418.29 per annum + £1680 car allowance 37.5 hours per week | Permanent Contract
Location: Birmingham & Walsall (office & patch-based) Closing Date: 7th July 2026
About The Role
We are seeking a proactive Income Officer to deliver an outstanding housing service across Birmingham and Walsall, supporting five housing co-operatives. This critical role demands a passionate individual who can maximise rental income, prevent arrears, and ensure tenants sustain their tenancies while providing excellent customer service.
You will work collaboratively with co-operative committees, partners, and broader housing professionals to achieve effective income management and tenant support.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Income management:
- Maintain and review rent accounts
- Implement strategies to prevent arrears and support income recovery
- Customer engagement:
- Conduct home visits and tenant consultations
- Provide guidance on welfare benefits, troubleshoot financial challenges, and signpost support services
- Relationship management:
- Liaise closely with DWP and Housing Benefit teams
- Prepare and, where necessary, present cases in courts or tribunals
- Operational support:
- Keep accurate records and assist in performance reporting
- Attend committee and partner meetings (up to four evening meetings per month)
- Diverse responsibilities:
- Work with tenants across Birmingham and Walsall
- Foster relationships with co-operative committees and stakeholders across five housing co-ops
Who We’re Looking For
Essential Criteria:
- Proven experience in housing, income recovery, or customer service (housing sector preferred)
- Solid knowledge of welfare benefits, social housing tenancies, and related policies
- Familiarity with court processes for arrears cases
- Strong IT skills (especially with accounting/reporting tools)
- Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to balance empathy with assertiveness when working in high-pressure situations
- Full UK driving licence with access to a vehicle
- Minimum 5 GCSEs (or equivalent), including Maths & English
- A CIH Level 3 qualification is desirable, or a willingness to work towards accreditation

- Familiarity with co-operative governance or housing collective models (a plus)
- Previous housing maintenance coordination or experience working with disadvantaged communities useful
