Coating Technical Manager
# Coating Technical Manager
Reporting to the Global Technical Director, the Coating Technical Manager will provide operational and people management for a team including:
- Technical Subject Matter Experts
- Coating Engineers
- Coating QC Inspectors
- Document Controller
- Laboratory Testing Coordinator
The role holder will ensure departmental objectives align with company-wide goals, oversee day-to-day operations, develop talent and drive continuous improvement within the function.
Work Experience and Education
- A science-based bachelor’s degree or equivalent
- Proven experience managing a technical, operational or specialist department
- Prior experience in departmental or functional management
Skills & Knowledge Required
- Leadership & strategy: Strong strategic planning capability
- Communication: Exceptional verbal and written skills; confident presenter
- Financial management: Ability to manage budgets and allocate resources effectively
- Team leadership: Experience leading teams, resolving conflict, driving performance
- Organisation: High levels of organisation, attention to detail and problem-solving capability
- Influence & management: People management skills, with credibility at senior level
- Cross-disciplinary collaboration: Ability to work effectively across functions and build internal and external relationships
- Market understanding: Ability to translate client and market needs into material and process performance requirements
- Industry knowledge: Experience operating within structured business management systems and translating high-level strategy into actionable plans

Key Responsibilities
- Strategic leadership: Develop and implement departmental plans to meet organisational objectives, translating corporate strategy into departmental goals and KPIs
- People leadership: Manage, mentor and develop staff for a positive culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Technical standards: Work with the Global Technical Director to define and regularly review technical competency standards (ensuring activities are fit for purpose, safe, and sustainable)

Core Duties
- Collaborate with the Global Technical Director and project teams to allocate Coating Engineers for technical documentation and testing activities
- Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring efficiency and quality of output
- Review, develop and improve departmental processes and workflows
- Maintain a critical understanding of regulatory environments and emerging trends in coating materials, technologies and applications
- Ensure compliance with company policies, health & safety regulations, and industry standards
- Monitor department expenditure, approve spending and manage budgets within agreed constraints
- Conduct regular performance evaluations of departmental staff
- Partner with HR to support recruitment, onboarding, training, and development
- Represent the department in cross-functional meetings and collaborate with senior leaders
