Commercial and Technology Lawyer - AVP

Commercial and Technology Lawyer AVP – Global Commercial, Innovation & Technology (CIT) Legal Team

Join us as a Commercial and Technology Lawyer AVP at Barclays, where you’ll be part of our Global Commercial, Innovation and Technology (CIT) Legal team, providing specialist legal services and strategic advice across the Barclays Group in areas at the cutting edge of law, innovation, and regulation.


About the Role

This role is integral to ensuring the bank complies with all applicable laws and regulations while managing legal and reputational risks associated with commercial contracts, innovation, technology, data licensing, sponsorship, and service activities.

You will develop and implement best practice legal strategies, offer regulatory and compliance advice, negotiate and review high-volume and high-value contracts, and proactively identify and communicate legal and regulatory risks.

Accountabilities

You will be responsible for delivering the following key duties:

  • Legal Strategy & Risk Management:

    • Develop and implement best practice legal strategies to manage risk and compliance across CIT Areas.
    • Advise and support Barclays’ business units on regulatory compliance, technology and innovation strategy, sponsorship, data licensing, and contract negotiation.
    • Lead and represent the bank in legal proceedings, arbitration, and regulatory investigations related to CIT Areas.
  • Legal documento & Contracts:

    • Creation, drafting, and review of legal agreements, licenses, and contracts for commercial services, technology, software, data, real estate, sponsorship, and other legal documents.
    • Ensure all agreements and procedures meet applicable laws and regulations.
  • Compliance & Regulations:

    • Conduct legal research and analysis to track changes in laws, regulations, and Leslie Rules and Regulations (LRRs) that may impact Barclays.
    • Collaborate with Barclays’ Procurement, Technology, and Business Teams to ensure alignment with evolving policies.
    • Develop and deliver training programmes on legal and regulatory requirements for employees.

  • Risk Management & Advocacy:
    • Proactively identify and communicate legal risks and advises on proactive risk mitigation.
    • Contribute to policy development and ensure LRRs are effectively reflected in relevant controls.

Requirements

Essential Criteria

√ A qualified solicitor, barrister, or legal professional (UK or equivalent jurisdiction) with senior-level post-qualification experience (both in-house and private practice are highly valued).

√ Demonstrated experience advising on:

  • Commercial and technology agreements, including:
    • Supply, client, and partner-facing contracts
    • Software licencing, hardware maintenance, SaaS projects, cloud contracts
    • Data licensing, professional services, sponsorship agreements
    • Proofs of Concepts (PoCs) and innovation-led contracts

√ Experience in:

  • Managing legal risks in compliance with organisational policies and standards.
  • Embedding better risk management practices across business divisions.
  • Independent case management with various stakeholders, including Procurement, Technology, and Front-Line Business Teams.

√ Strong collaborative mindset – ability to partner with colleagues to achieve the goals of the CIT, legal function, and wider Barclays organisation.


Highly Desirable (Commercial Advantage)

✱ Understanding of financial services regulation, including:

  • Outsourcing arrangements
  • Ring-fencing requirements
  • Appointed Representatives (AE) regime
  • Operational recovery and resolution-based compliance

✱ Success may be judged on key critical skills, such as:

  • Risk and controls management
  • Change and transformation
  • Business acumen and strategic thinking
  • Digital and technology-specific insights

Location & Flexibility

This role can be based in Birmingham, Manchester, or Glasgow, with remote work options to be discussed.
