About Us
Our mission is to deliver joy in every shop, through unbeatable choice, unrivalled service, and reassuringly good value. We’re also on a mission to empower our business with smart technology; we’ve recently launched our AI Academy, providing a tailored AI learning journey for every colleague.
We’re Ocado Retail, a market-leading joint venture between Ocado Group and M&S, and the world’s largest dedicated online supermarket, ocado.com. Not only is Ocado the only place to shop a full range of M&S food online, it’s also the home to the widest online supermarket range in the UK and champion of small, independent brands. We’re also the brains behind Zoom by Ocado, our same-day grocery delivery service.
About The Team And The Role
Operating at the intersection of retail excellence and cutting-edge logistics automation, Ocado Retail manages a complex, tech-driven supply chain ecosystem. We are looking for a Commercial Lead (Technology & Operations) to act as the primary commercial bridge between Ocado Retail and Ocado Group.
This is a highly collaborative, analytical role focused on investment appraisal and strategic governance. You will take ownership of evaluating the business cases for new warehouse technology, automated systems (MHE), and fulfilment infrastructure—ensuring that every capital investment (CAPEX) aligns with Ocado Retail’s financial and operational targets. You will be responsible for managing relationships and performance tied to an annual spend of over £200 million. Acting as an internal relationship lead, you will collaborate across matrixed corporate lines to monitor project delivery, optimise commercial logic, and ensure our existing automated assets achieve peak efficiency.
What You’ll Do
- Capacity Forecasting: Take accountability for translating both short-term (3-month) and long-term capacity forecasts into clear capacity requests for Ocado Group.
- Investment Appraisal & ROI Modelling: Lead the commercial evaluation of new technology applications, automation rollouts, or warehouse expansion projects. Build and maintain robust financial/operational models (Excel/Google Sheets) to assess return on investment (ROI) and cost-benefit trade-offs.
- Performance and Productivity: Monitor the performance, productivity, and efficiency of vendor-provided equipment (MHE) and technologies.
- Contract Management: Ensure agreements are in place to secure the capacity guarantees we need.
- Commercial Optimisation: Collaboratively review fee structures, commercial logic, and contractual milestones to ensure maximum cost-efficiencies for the business. Evaluate the achievement of business case goals for the new technology deployed in our warehouses.
- Cross-Functional Relationship Management & Matrix Collaboration: Successfully navigate a complex, matrixed environment with interconnected stakeholders, building strong, collaborative relationships across different corporate entities to drive alignment, e.g., Finance Business Partners
- Issue Resolution: Proactively identify and resolve performance issues to ensure contractual obligations are consistently met.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
