Commercial Manager
Location: Portsmouth (Hybrid – 60% onsite)
Contract: 6-Month Contract (Potential Extension)
Rate: £36.29 per hour PAYE / £48.00 per hour Umbrella
Hours: 37 Hours per week
IR35: Inside IR35
Clearance: SC Clearance required (BPSS+ and eligibility to obtain/hold full SC clearance)
About the Role
Our client, a leading organisation within the defence and secure communications sector, is seeking an experienced Commercial Manager to join their Commercial & Contracts team. Working on complex, high-profile programmes, you will play a key role in the preparation, negotiation, and management of commercial commitments throughout the full project lifecycle, from bid and acquisition stages through to contract closure.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Commercial Manager who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys balancing commercial risk, stakeholder management, contract negotiation, and business growth initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide commercial support on complex bids requiring innovation and creativity.
- Lead the negotiation and management of a variety of contractual agreements.
- Manage contracts ranging from low value to multi-million-pound programmes.
- Support contract amendments, variations, and change management activities.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate commercial risks while ensuring governance compliance.
- Work closely with procurement teams to ensure contractual obligations and risks are effectively managed.
- Build and maintain strong customer and stakeholder relationships.
- Deliver commercial guidance and support across multiple business functions.
- Promote commercial best practices, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
Essential Experience
- Demonstrated experience within a commercial or contracts management role.
- Strong contract management and negotiation skills.
- Experience supporting complex bids and tender activities.
- Excellent stakeholder management and influencing abilities.
- Experience working within the defence sector, MOD environment, or defence supply chain.
- Knowledge of project management, risk management, and commercial finance principles.
- Experience working directly with customers and suppliers.

Desirable Experience
- Experience working with UK MOD proposals and contracts.
- Understanding of Defence Reform Act requirements and Single Source Regulations.
- Experience developing and delivering successful commercial proposals.
- Continuous improvement experience.
