About Us
W M Donald Ltd is a leading civil engineering contractor with a strong reputation for quality, safety, and innovation. We are seeking an experienced and commercially driven Commercial Manager to lead the commercial function of our Inverness area.
This is a key leadership role for someone who can combine strong commercial awareness with a practical understanding of civils projects, contracts, cost control, and client relationships. You will play a central part in protecting margin, managing risk, and supporting the continued growth and performance of the branch.
About The Role
As Commercial Manager, you will take ownership of the commercial performance of the Inverness civils operation, ensuring projects are managed effectively from tender stage through to final account.
You will work closely with operational teams, clients, subcontractors, and senior leadership to drive value, maintain strong contractual control, and support successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead the commercial management of civils projects across the Inverness branch
- Oversee cost planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting
- Manage valuations, applications for payment, variations, and final accounts
- Review and administer contract terms, identifying and mitigating commercial risk
- Support tender and pricing activity, providing commercial input at pre-construction stage
- Monitor project performance and margins, ensuring robust cost control throughout
- Work closely with Contracts Managers, Project Managers, and site teams to improve commercial outcomes
- Manage subcontractor procurement, payment, and account settlement
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, suppliers, and internal stakeholders
- Produce clear and accurate commercial reports for senior management
- Help develop commercial processes, controls, and best practice across the branch

Essential Requirements
- Proven experience in a Commercial Manager, Senior Quantity Surveyor, or similar commercial leadership role
- Strong background in civils, infrastructure, groundworks, or construction projects
- Sound knowledge of contract administration and commercial management principles
- Experience managing project costs, valuations, variations, and final accounts
- Strong negotiation and communication skills
- Commercially astute, analytical, and detail-focused
- Ability to build credibility with clients and internal teams alike
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines
- Proficient in commercial reporting and cost management systems
- Full UK driving licence preferred
