Commercial Manager
Commercial Manager – Energy Projects (Llandyfaelog/Aberthaw Substation)
Murphy is recruiting for a Commercial Manager to work with the Energy team. The role will be based in one of two locations:
- Aberthaw (south of Cardiff, near Barry) – extension of an existing substation.
- Llandyfaelog (between Carmarthen and Llanelli) – new substation build.
The commercial team will be working primarily off-site during Stages 1a and 1b from a client-co-located office in Bristol/Cardiff (TBC).

Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership & Stakeholder Management
- Manage all commercial aspects of the project, ensuring seamless liaison with stakeholders.
- Oversee the project commercial team on a daily basis, providing guidance and support.
Contract & Risk Management
- Conduct monthly cost and value reconciliation reviews.
- Handle project contractual changes, including variations and contractor claims, while managing the early warning process.
- Work with the Project Director to maintain and review the project risk register, implementing timely mitigations.

Procurement & Financial Control
- Lead project procurement, ensuring cost-effective strategies for Murphy.
- Optimise the cash position through Work-in-Progress (WIP) control, cash flow analysis, and revenue improvement plans.
- Monitor contractor costs weekly, providing construction teams with relevant financial performance updates to enhance profit margins.
Programme & Performance Monitoring
- Assist the Project Director and Planning Manager in the programme management.
- Continuously seek commercial improvements, including margin enhancement, change controls, and risk avoidance.
- Oversee project controls, focusing on value, cost, production, and supply chain management.
Requirements
- Charted Quantity Surveyor (MRICS) or relevant equivalent experience.
- Commercial acumen with extensive experience in the Construction/Civil Engineering industry.
- Expertise in Common Standard Forms of Contract (e.g., NEC).
- Strong understanding of programming techniques and project controls.
