About the Role
Anglian Water offers a flexible approach, this role offers you the flexibility to work from home and from an Anglian Water office. Your based location would be Thorpewood House in Peterborough.
Central Services is a newly formed team at Anglian Water, dedicated to delivering safe, professional, collaborative and cost-effective maintenance and engineering support across the business. We play a vital role in helping the company achieve its strategic goals by providing a wide range of services—from statutory compliance, facilities and estate management to project delivery and technical support. Our portfolio also includes fleet and logistics management, plant services, and champions continuous learning and development. Collaboration and high standards are at the heart of everything we do.
Are you a commercially astute professional with a passion for driving value, performance, and compliance? We are looking for a dynamic Commercial Manager to manage day-to-day commercial operations within an area in our Central Services team.
In this pivotal role, you’ll take ownership of contract management, financial oversight, and commercial governance, working closely with stakeholders across the business to ensure cost efficiency, performance against commercial targets, and alignment with organisational goals. You'll play a critical part in delivering our commercial strategy—negotiating with key supply chain partners, auditing final accounts, and promoting best practices across the function. From managing commercial performance targets to validating sensitive commercial information, you’ll ensure that robust controls and processes are in place to maximise value and mitigate risk.
What will you be doing?

Manage Daily Commercial Operations
- Oversee and implement commercial processes across Central Services.
- Ensure financial clarity and compliance with commercial policies and legislation.
- Lead Supplier account reviews and audits to drive optimal financial outcomes.
- Support delivery teams with commercial insights, promoting cost control and continuous improvement.

Drive Commercial Performance
- Collaborate with operational teams to meet business and financial targets.
- Maximise cash flow, validate commercial data, and negotiate with strategic suppliers.
- Develop and maintain commercial dashboards, monthly reports, and financial profiles.

Commercial Assurance and Risk Management
- Identify, assess, and mitigate commercial risks impacting delivery objectives.
- Manage the project risk register and coordinate assurance activities.
- Promote a culture of accountability and proactive risk management.

- Champion a strong Health & Safety culture through leadership and example.
- Participate in site visits, uphold safety standards, and challenge unsafe behaviours.
What does it take to be a Commercial Manager?
We’re seeking a commercially driven and strategically minded leader with a strong background in construction management, quantity surveying, or a related discipline. You'll bring a blend of technical expertise, commercial acumen, and collaborative leadership to help shape and deliver our commercial strategy across Central Services.
To be successful in this role, you’ll have:
- A degree in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or a related field.
- Membership of a professional body is advantageous, along with evidence of ongoing professional and leadership development.
- Proven experience in a similar senior or strategic commercial role, ideally within complex matrix environments.
- A strong track record of building high-performing, aligned teams and shaping commercial strategies that deliver results.
- In-depth knowledge of NEC contracts and standard forms of contract.
- Demonstrated commercial and contractual awareness, with the ability to manage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
You’ll also bring:
- Strategic thinking with a hands-on approach to implementing plans effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex information clearly and succinctly.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- The ability to inspire and motivate others, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
