Job Overview
We are strengthening our London Fleet Team and looking for a Commercial Fleet Underwriter (Existing Business) to join us.
Success in this role will rely on:
- Driving profitability through prudent underwriting of fleet risks within agreed authority
- Building trusted relationships with broker partners in London and the wider UK market
- Supporting trading objectives through effective risk management and analytics
- Working with a team of market-leading brokers, industry experts, and AXA’s Underwriting Technical Centre
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting & Risk Assessment
- Accurately underwrite existing fleet business, ensuring profitability while adhering to AXA’s appetite and guidelines.
- Analyze policy wordings, industry trends, and regulatory frameworks to appropriately price premiums.
- Gather and assess underwriting information to make data-driven risk decisions.
- Monitor loss ratios and risk performance, taking corrective actions where needed.
Broker & Client Engagement
- Develop strong credibility and relationships with brokers by demonstrating technical expertise, responsiveness, and strategic insights.
- Visit accounts, manage complex cases, and boost broker satisfaction to improve renewal rates.
- Collaborate with brokers to design tailored solutions that align with their clients’ needs.
- Lead and participate in meetings to position AXA as a trusted solutions provider.

Strategic & Operational Support
- Visibility on backbook portfolio to identify opportunities for retention, profitability improvements, or risk transfer.
- Support the team by developing processes, standards, and trade expertise for fleet risk.
- Contribute to underwriting training, support discussions, and technical forums.
Required Skills & Experience
Essential
- extensive commercial fleet underwriting experience—ideally in a composite environment.
- Profit-driven mindset with a strong trading capability, including negotiation skills and commercial awareness.
- Analytical thinking with numerical skills, including experience in risk monitoring and financial controls.
- Regulatory knowledge: Understanding of UK insurance regulations, FCA/IDD requirements, and Treasury regulations.
- Evidence of building and maintaining high-value broker relationships, along with consistent, clean portfolios of business.
- Ability to act quickly and justify decisions—balancing responsiveness with risk assessment.
Must Haves
- Experience in existing business underwriting, assessment of submits to allocate or decline, and management of retention programmes.
- Confidence in working within delegation levels while demonstrating openness to underwriting advice when needed.

Nice to Haves
- CII Unit 9 – Motor Insurance or equivalent qualification.
- Experience with MAFI system or commercial fleet insurance back office processes.
- Member of FCA/PCA panels or possessable.
Job Arrangements

- You will work at least 60% of your time physically at our London office (or occasionally visiting clients or attending industry events).
