Job Overview
The London Commercial Team specialises in mid-market and mid-corporate accounts, covering Property, Casualty, Construction, and Motor Fleet. Collaborating with national, global, and independent broker partners—primarily in London’s ‘square mile’—we’re seeking a Commercial Fleet Underwriter to join our team as we strengthen our offering.
As Fleet Underwriter, you will:
- Deliver profitable underwriting aligned with trading targets, within agreed authority levels
- Develop key broker relationships to support business growth
- Ensure accurate underwriting of existing fleet risks, leveraging AXA’s appetite and tools
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting & Risk Assessment
- Profitably underwrite existing fleet risks while adhering to regulatory practices and governance
- Analyse policy wordings, market trends, and risk exposures to set appropriate premiums
- Apply technical pricing methodologies based on data and industry benchmarks

Broker & Client Engagement
- Build trust through strategic questioning, needs analysis, and tailored solution design
- Foster long-term commercial relationships by showcasing expertise and market knowledge
- Lead large-case management to optimise financial outcomes and maximise retention
- Represent AXA in broker/client meetings to secure opportunities
Operational Excellence
- Monitor loss ratios by implementing underwriting controls and investigating poor-performing accounts
- Collaborate with Underwriting Technical Support and intermediaries to strengthen internal expertise
- Use benchmarks, trend analysis, and diagnostics to drive decision-making
Work Arrangements
AXA operates in a hybrid-first model, empowering flexibility. For this role:
- You will work at least 60% of your week on-site, balancing desk-based tasks, client visits and industry events at our London office
- Flexible working arrangements are encouraged and can be discussed with Talent Acquisition during the interview process
your skills & experience
Core Underwriting Expertise
✔ Strong commercial fleet underwriting knowledge with composite insurance experience ✔ Hands-on experience in evaluating risks across fleet operations
Trading & Broker Relationships
✔ Proven ability to negotiate and align commercial interests for profitable outcomes ✔ Track record of account monitoring and strategic decision-making ✔ Establishes credibility with brokers through trust-building communication

Technical & Compliance Proficiency
✔ In-depth understanding of commercial fleet regulations, including IDD and ‘treating customers fairly’ (TCF) ✔ Clear grasp of legislative requirements and market expectations
Analytical & Organisational Skills
✔ Strong numerical reasoning and analytical capabilities ✔ Organisational adeptness to manage workload effectively ✔ Ability to interpret data and apply to risk mitigation and strategy
** Certifications (Desired)**
- Cert CII or DIP qualifications form a clear advantage
Legal & Compliance Prerequisites
- Protected right to work in the UK
- Approved for Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD)—requires background screening (upfront and every 4 years)
