About us
National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.
About the role
This is a rare opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping one of the country’s most ambitious energy infrastructure projects, helping to decarbonise industry and secure Britain’s energy future.
At National Gas, we’re investing in major hydrogen and CCUS projects to support the UK’s journey to net zero. As Commercial Cost Lead, you’ll take a central role in a high-profile Joint Venture (JV) developing one of the UK’s first hydrogen pipeline networks in the Humber region.
You’ll act as the commercial bridge between National Gas and its partners, shaping strategy, influencing decisions, and ensuring strong commercial performance across the lifecycle of this landmark project.
What you'll be doing
- Lead commercial negotiations with JV partners, stakeholders, and third-party suppliers.
- Build and manage strong, trust-based relationships to ensure alignment with joint venture objectives.
- Develop and deliver commercial strategies that maximise value for both the JV and National Gas.
- Provide commercial input into governance, reporting, and key decision-making forums.
- Analyse financial and commercial performance to identify optimisation opportunities.
- Support financial forecasting, budgeting, and scenario planning alongside finance teams.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate commercial and partnership risks.
- Represent National Gas in JV steering groups and strategic discussions.
- Ensure compliance with JV agreements while driving continuous improvement and evolution.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
