Job Title: Commissioning Engineer – Electrical (Weapons)

Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Hybrid

Salary: £37,091+ (Commensurate with skills and experience)

What You Will Be Doing

In this role, you’ll be responsible for supervising and performing commissioning activities to support delivery of the Strategic Weapon System on the UK’s next generation of ballistic nuclear submarine platforms. You’ll oversee installation, testing, and maintenance of complex electrical systems, ensuring compliance with safety and performance standards.


Core Duties

  • Supervise and safely carry out commissioning activities for strategic weapon systems
  • Demonstrate exemplary Health, Safety & Environmental (HS&E) behaviours at all times
  • Oversee and advise on installation of system equipment
  • Produce and review test documentation and procedures
  • Conduct testing, commissioning, operation, and maintenance (preventative and corrective)
  • Record test results and maintain detailed equipment performance logs
  • Represent the company at training events and technical discussions across the UK and USA
  • Support sea trials, including potential work onboard submarines and shift-based activities

Your Skills And Experience

  • HNC (or equivalent) in an Electrical discipline, or relevant experience desirable for Engineer level
  • Experience in testing and commissioning electrical/electronic systems desirable for Engineer
  • Knowledge of installation and testing of fibre optic interfaces (advantageous)
  • Awareness of authorised documentation and test standards
  • Experience in electrical installations

The Strategic Weapons Test & Commissioning Team

You’ll be part of a team delivering some of the UK’s most complex and critical defence projects. The Strategic Weapons Test Organisation plays a key role in ensuring submarine systems meet or exceed design specifications before delivery to the Ministry of Defence.

Working closely with Engineering, Build, Quality, and Supply Chain teams—as well as US partners and equipment manufacturers—you’ll have opportunities to influence design, commissioning, and testing activities, alongside opportunities for travel and career development.
