Commissioning Engineer – Battery Energy Storage Systems

Location: Project-based (75%+ on-site travel) Employer: e-STORAGE (Canadian Solar Inc., NASDAQ: CSIQ)

This role focuses on testing, commissioning, and oversight of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)—ensuring projects from pre-commissioning to substantial completion deliver flawlessly.


Position Summary

As the Commissioning Engineer, you’ll lead cross-functional teams through the critical Phase of BESS project execution. This hybrid role requires 75%+ on-site presence, blending technical oversight, stakeholder coordination, and process improvements to ensure projects meet performance goals and standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with owners, O&M teams, designers, and contractors
  • Develop commissioning plans, checklists, and functional test documentation
  • Identify scope gaps in design, construction, and permitting
  • Oversee executional commissioning activities, from pre-commissioning to system handover

Responsibilities

📌 Project Planning (Remote)

  • Participate in stakeholder meetings (owners, design, construction, operations) to align commissioning activities with project goals.
  • Assist the Commissioning Manager in drafting commissioning plans, specifications, and test protocols based on client/company standards.
  • Review project documentation and preliminary designs to flag gaps in responsibility or scope.

🏗️ Project Commissioning (On-Site)

  • Execute commissioning activities, coordinating scope, stakeholders, and schedules nationwide.
  • Interface with internal teams (Project Manager, Construction Manager) and external parties (utilities, AHJs, contractors).
  • Daily collaboration with equipment suppliers—distributors, producers, distributors—through daily plan-of-day (POD) briefings.
  • Review/assess Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) procedures and reports from manufacturers.
  • Conduct site visits to align commissioning plans and ensure testing timelines.
  • Inspect construction work, troubleshoot installation/commissioning issues, and recommend process enhancements.

🚀 Onward Optimization

  • Train operations & maintenance personnel on commissioned systems and continuous commissioning programs.
  • Leverage lessons learned from projects to suggest industry-wide best practices.
  • Foster strategic vendor relationships across the energy storage sector.

Requirements

🎓 Education & Experience

  • BS in Engineering or equivalent practical knowledge (electronics, electrical, mechanical).
  • 5–10 years in BESS commissioning or EPC/integrator contractor roles—energy storage systems preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Medium-voltage stations, inverters, transformers, switchgear procurement
    • SCADA and communication protocols
    • Regulatory standards & local code compliance
