About Hertfordshire Constabulary.
The constabulary employs over 3500 officers and staff and 500 PCSO's and specials. We are a modern, proactive and flexible police force. We put the communities we serve first and are there for victims when they need us most.
We are now hiring for a Vehicle Commissioning Technician to help convert a range of vehicles to a specification suited to their intended roles.
This position provides an exciting opportunity for a vehicle technician with an aptitude for vehicle electrical systems to branch off into this specialism, and with ongoing support and training, strive towards becoming a recognised expert in this field.
Hertfordshire Constabulary has a diverse fleet of nearly 700 vehicles, and the initial role conversions carried out on these form a crucial element in their effectiveness in supporting front line Policing within Hertfordshire.
Modern Police vehicles routinely incorporate a number of advanced electrical systems, including ANPR, communication, telematics and tracking systems.

What does the Vehicle Commissioning Technician role involve?
You will be working within a small but expanding team of vehicle commissioning technicians, where the variety of vehicles, tasks undertaken and systems used, mean no two days are the same.
With an expanding knowledge and skill set achieved through undertaking the role and ongoing training, you will be able to support the department's team of vehicle technicians when carrying out maintenance and diagnostics of these Police conversions.
We are a united team, and this role is important to us as it gives a great sense of pride knowing we are doing our part to keep Hertfordshire safe. Every day is different whatever your role in policing, so here’s an overview of your day-to-day responsibilities:
- You will be dismantling base vehicles to allow the conversion process to be undertaken, installing and fabricating when required, wiring harnesses to an agreed specification before re-assembling the vehicle and fully testing all aspects of the conversion.
- Be able to read wiring schematics and translate these into wiring harnesses.
- Diagnosing/fault finding and remedial works on Police vehicles and their unique Police equipment.
- Familiarity of modern CAN systems and how they operate would be advantageous for this position.
- Keeping up to date with all administrative tasks
- Plan and prepare vehicle equipment installations following a pre-determined specification but gaining the autonomy with time to support in the design process and compliance testing of the conversions.
- General housekeeping.
- Attend external and online training courses when required.
- Liaise with management/stores to reduce vehicle downtime.

- Experience in use of computerised Vehicle diagnostic equipment.
- Full UK Driving Licence.

Vetting Process
Please note that, as part of the vetting process, the BCH Vetting Unit may need to contact your current line manager for a Supervisor Appraisal. This requirement aligns with the 2025 National Guidelines for Vetting (APP 6.5.18).

- Moving into a role requiring MV clearance (even if you currently hold MV clearance)
- Moving into or working in a role involving close contact with vulnerable individuals
