Position Title: Specialist Communication Support & Learning Support Assistant
Reports To: Steven Blewitt
Salary: £28,625 – £33,063 per year
About the Role
The Specialist Communication Support & Learning Support Assistant will provide critical communication support to deaf and hearing-impaired students and others with complex communication needs. This role ensures access to learning, assessments, enrichment activities, and all aspects of college life through the use of:
- British Sign Language (BSL)
- Sign Supported English (SSE)
- Alternative communication strategies
Supporting students in independent learning, confidence-building, and participation will be central to this role. The postholder must also assist with personal care regimes and emergencies, maintaining chairside support where necessary.
In addition to communication support, the role includes Learning Support Assistant duties, such as:
- Providing one-to-one and small-group tuition
- Supporting students with additional learning needs and disabilities
- Encouraging independence, self-advocacy, and progress
The role requires timely record-keeping, multi-agency collaboration, and keeping abreast of best practices in inclusive education, assistive technology, and Deaf awareness.

The following are indicative (not exhaustive) priorities of the role:
Specialist Communication Support
- Facilitate two-way communication using BSL, SSE, or other agreed methods in:
- Classrooms
- Workshops
- Practical & community learning environments
- Ensure full participation in learning, assessments, and college life by mediating between:
- Students (including those with additional support needs)
- Teaching staff
- Support teams
- Peers & external professionals
- Adapt communication styles, resources, and explanations to meet individual student needs.
Student-Based Support
- Collaborate with curriculum teams to implement reasonable adjustments and inclusive strategies.
- Prepare and adapt accessible material as needed (e.g., visual aids, scripts, or assistive technologies).
- Provide liaison support during:
- Tutorials & examinations
- Work experience placements
- Enrichment/ extracurricular activities
- Educational visits & transition activities
Learning Support & Independent Development
- Assist with one-to-one and group support for students with:
- Learning disabilities
- Other complex communication and/or accessibility needs
- Maintain records of:
- Student progress
- Intervention strategies
- Communication needs (complying with college policies)
- Work with parents/carers, external agencies, and professionals to improve student outcomes.
Personal & Emergency Support
- Provide chairside support where trained and required during procedural care.
- Enable effective communication in personal care (where not physically performed by the position holder).
- Ensure dignity, choice, and independence for students in sensitive situations.

Professional Development & Training
- Attend deaf awareness programmes, assistive technology training, and inclusive education resources.
- Regularly update knowledge on best practice in communication support and special education inclusion.

The postholder will be expected to demonstrate flexibility in adapting strategies to accommodate:
