Communication Support Worker
Communication Professional Vacancies (BSL Level 2+) – Staffordshire County Council, ASSIST
Do you know British Sign Language (BSL)? Staffordshire County Council is recruiting for Communication Professionals (Level 2+ BSL) to join our team at ASSIST (post 16 sensory support).
About the Role
We offer opportunities for salaried BSL Interpreters as well as freelance/zero-hours positions, including:
- Communication Support Workers (CSWs)
- Trainee Sign Language Interpreters (TSLIs)
- Registered Sign Language Interpreters (RSLIs)
Hours: Flexible, dependent on client needs, funding, and location.
Location: Staffordshire Place 1, Stafford (mileage reimbursed as agreed).
Main Responsibilities
Provide curriculum access in education and community access for individuals with sensory loss (hearing impairment).
Duties include:
- Curriculum support:
- Facilitate student access via signing, simplifying written materials, or note-taking.
- Encourage confidence and independence among students.
- Offer out-of-class support (e.g., research assistance, assignment submission, exam guidance—training provided).
- Community access:
- Translate letters, make phone calls, or accompany clients to appointments/activities.

The Ideal Candidate
We are seeking an individual who:
- Has experience within the deaf community and proficiency in BSL (Level 2+).
- Can establish friendly yet professional relationships.
- Is competent in digital communication (emails, texts, Microsoft Teams) with prompt responses.
- Is flexible to meet role-specific requirements.
Additional roles may be available in education/community settings based on qualifications, experience, and availability. Applicants are encouraged to disclose all relevant credentials (e.g., qualifications in progress).
