Communications & Content Manager (Maternity Cover) – Fixed-Term Role, Darlington

The Role

You’ll oversee member-focused communications and content, ensuring clarity, accessibility, and relevance across every stage of their journey.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead high-quality communications and content that enhance member understanding, experience, and outcomes.
  • Translate member insights into practical improvements for journeys, service experiences, and communications.
  • Define end-to-end member journeys to inform transformation initiative communication, ensuring timely delivery.
  • Align all communications with Railpen’s Content Standards.
  • Provide expertise and a member-first perspective in projects, regulatory work, and change initiatives.
  • Manage content across digital channels (member sites, etc.), maintaining accuracy, accessibility, and journey alignment.
  • Drive digital engagement and behaviour change through targeted campaigns.
  • Lead a communications and content team, inspiring with direction, feedback, and support.
  • Collaborate with senior stakeholders, advising on tailored, impactful approaches while championing member needs.
  • Act as a point of escalation for urgent/sensitive member communications, safeguarding trust.

Ideal Candidate Profile

A blend of communications expertise, member-first perspective, and leadership experience:

  • Relevant Experience:

    • Proven track record in clear, targetted communications (ideally in regulated/complex environments).
    • Deep understanding of customer/member journeys, turning data into actionable improvements.
    • Hands-on management of digital content, including accessibility and user journey optimisation.
    • Demonstratable people leadership, including team direction and development.
  • Soft Skills:

    • Confident stakeholder relationships—balancing constructive challenge with alignment.
    • Excellence in verbal/written communication, with a talent for simplifying complexity.
    • Pragmatic, high-velocity working with a focus on outcomes over process.
  • Preferred (but not essential): Experience in pensions, financial services, or customer experience.
