Job Description

Title: Communications & Campaigns Manager

Hours

34 hours per week

Days

5 days (Monday to Friday)

Salary Range

£30,000 - £35,000 per annum

Location

Liverpool Head Office/Hybrid with expected regular travel to Glasgow and the rest of the country

Job Purpose

The Communications & Campaigns Manager will lead the development and delivery of the charity's communications, media relations and public awareness campaigns, helping to raise the profile of lung cancer, influence public understanding, support patient engagement and promote the charity's work across research, screening, advocacy and support services.

The postholder will be responsible for planning and delivering impactful communications activities, managing media relationships, leading Lung Cancer Awareness Month campaigns, developing compelling patient stories and ensuring consistent, effective messaging across all digital and traditional channels.

Key Responsibilities

Communications and Media Relations

  • Lead the development and delivery of communications activity to raise awareness of lung cancer and the charity's work.
  • Draft and distribute press releases, media statements and briefing materials on key developments relating to lung cancer, research and policy.
  • Serve as the primary contact for media enquiries, coordinating timely and accurate responses.
  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists, broadcasters and media outlets.
  • Monitor lung cancer-related news and proactively identify opportunities to generate positive media coverage for the charity.
  • Develop media case studies through interviews with patient advocates and carers, ensuring stories are handled sensitively and ethically.

Campaigns and Awareness Raising

  • Plan and deliver annual Lung Cancer Awareness Month (LCAM) campaigns, including campaign strategy, content creation, media engagement and evaluation.
  • Secure sponsorship and partnership opportunities to support campaign activities.
  • Commission and manage campaign assets, including video content, digital materials and printed resources.
  • Develop innovative public awareness initiatives that increase engagement and understanding of lung cancer and lung cancer screening.

Digital Communications and Content

  • Manage and update news and content on the charity's website.
  • Contribute to the charity's social media coverage, ensuring timely, engaging and consistent content.
  • Develop and maintain brand guidelines and ensure all communications reflect the charity's values, voice and strategic objectives.
  • Work with colleagues to ensure effective sharing of content across internal and external channels.
  • Support digital marketing activity to promote the charity's services, campaigns and events.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Support communications activity relating to research projects, screening initiatives and community engagement programmes.
  • Work closely with NHS screening services and other healthcare partners to promote lung cancer screening awareness.
  • Develop communications plans for key stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, researchers, supporters and patient communities.

Content Development and Corporate Communications

  • Draft presentations, speeches, reports and briefing materials for senior leaders, conferences and stakeholder events.
  • Ensure patient information resources and information materials remain accessible and up to date.
  • Support the promotion of the charity's research, advocacy and service delivery activities through compelling storytelling and content creation.

Community Building

  • Lead the development and launch of a new online community for patients, carers and supporters.
  • Foster engagement and participation within online communities, ensuring a safe and supportive environment.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen relationships with patient advocates and community ambassadors.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Monitor and evaluate communications and campaign performance against agreed objectives.
  • Produce regular reports on media coverage, digital engagement, campaign outcomes and stakeholder reach.
  • Use insights and data to inform future communications strategies and campaigns.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience in communications, public relations, campaigns or marketing, preferably within the charity, healthcare or public sector.
  • Strong media relations experience, including drafting press releases and managing media enquiries.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to adapt content for different audiences.
  • Experience managing websites, social media channels and digital communications.
  • Ability to develop and deliver successful public awareness campaigns.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills.
  • Experience interviewing and working with patients, volunteers or individuals with lived experience.
  • Ability to build productive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Understanding of brand management and content governance.
  • A proactive, creative and collaborative approach to communications.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of lung cancer, cancer services, health inequalities or public health campaigns.
  • Experience working with NHS organisations, healthcare professionals or research institutions.
  • Experience managing external suppliers, agencies or content creators.
  • Experience establishing and managing online communities.
  • Knowledge of digital marketing, analytics and audience engagement tools.
