As a Communications Intern, you’ll have the chance to kick-start your career in a fast-paced and creative communications environment, gaining valuable hands-on experience while supporting the promotion of services that make a real difference to local communities. This is an exciting opportunity for someone at the start of their career who is eager to learn, develop new skills, and make a meaningful contribution within a supportive and collaborative team.
What will you be doing?
- You’ll support a variety of communications activities, working alongside experienced professionals to help deliver engaging and effective communications across the Council.
- From drafting social media content, press releases, and internal communications to supporting campaigns, events, and digital content creation, no two days will be the same.
- You’ll also help monitor media coverage, support the production of newsletters and briefings, and build relationships with colleagues across the organisation to help showcase the positive work taking place across West Northamptonshire.
This role will give you the opportunity to gain practical experience across multiple communication channels while developing a broad understanding of how communications supports a large and complex organisation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
