About the Role
Shape the story of one of the UK’s most ambitious universities. Since receiving its Royal Charter from Queen Victoria in 1900, the University of Birmingham has been pioneering groundbreaking work—uncovering Britain’s biggest dinosaur trackways, leading global clinical trials on children’s cancers, and studying the impact of school smartphone policies on adolescent mental wellbeing. With over £1 billion in income, record research funding, and rankings in the QS World University Top 76, the University is pushing boundaries. We’re seeking an exceptional Communications Manager to join our fast-paced and dynamic Corporate Communications team and help amplify our vision and impact.
In this role, you’ll be central to how the University communicates externally—with the media, policymakers, partners, and a global audience. You’ll develop and execute communications strategies across corporate affairs, regional impact, innovation, and education/research, crafting narratives that elevate our reputation and drive progress toward our boldest goals.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
