Introduction to YSJ

York St John is an ambitious, modern university located in the historic heart of York, and there has never been a more exciting time to join us.

As one of the fastest-growing universities in the U.K. in recent years, we have a new strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunities through education and contributing our talents to create a fairer world and a more prosperous region. We are placing inspirational learning and impactful research at the centre of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset.

The Team

The Communications team is part of the Marketing, Student Recruitment and Admissions (MSRA) Directorate. Teams within the Directorate are responsible for attracting applicants to the University, communicating with current students and alumni, and delivering events.

The role

We're looking for a creative, experienced communications officer to join the Communications team at our award-winning campus in York. You’ll join a busy, purposeful environment as we deliver our University for Social Impact strategy.

This role, reporting to the Head of Communications and Media Relations, is responsible for understanding our staff and student audiences, and identifying the best ways to share key messages, promote our achievements, highlight our community contribution and showcase our research influence. In addition to working on internal communications and external media relations, you’ll play a key role in ensuring that students feel heard, supported and informed.

The post-holder will support colleagues to use the University’s brand guidelines, clear and compassionate approach to communications, narrative and tone of voice.

Required Skills And Experience

  • Professional experience of shaping clear messages and writing compelling copy for diverse audiences
  • Digital skills to deploy communications across multiple platforms
  • The ability to work across external and internal communications by building and maintaining relationships with media contacts, community partners and external stakeholders, as well as with our staff and students.
  • A creative and inclusive approach to coordinating and delivering communications
  • Experience of the HE environment is an advantage, but more important is a track record of delivering engaging communications activity and campaigns, with the confidence and ability to provide strategic communications advice to colleagues.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
