About the Role
In this meaningful and impactful role, you’ll play a key part in the Probation Service by supporting people on probation to make amends through Community Payback. As a Community Payback Supervisor, you’ll lead unpaid work placements, services a wide range of manual tasks such as:
- Clearing overgrowth in public spaces
- Restoring community facilities (e.g., playgrounds, sports halls)
- Planting trees, laying flowerbeds, and litter picking
- Graffiti removal
You’ll supervise small teams, ensuring tasks are completed to the best of ability while demonstrating empathy, communication, and leadership.
Salary Starting at £28,064 (pro-rata)
Working Pattern
- Includes weekend working (50% pay premium).
- Some evening work may be required.
- Flexible to accommodate probationers with caring or work commitments.
Pay Progression The Probation Service competencies-based framework (CBF) allows progression as you develop skills, and annual band ranges will increase in line with government guidance.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise groups during up to 7-hour placements at off-site locations.
- Ensure completed tasks meet safety and quality standards.
- Demonstrate positive behaviour and guidance for offenders.
- Transport people/equipment using service vehicles (driving license required).*

Person Specification
- Mandatory Requirement: Must hold a full UK manual driving licence (automatic licenses are not acceptable).
- Understanding of community justice principles.
- Basic manual skills for tasks (no formal trade/specialist qualifications required).
- Ability to communicate clearly, demonstrate patience, and lead teams.
Note: Doing this role will involve physically supervising offenders. Rest breaks are achieved through team-based methods that prioritize wellbeing.

- Security Checks (e.g., Criminal Record Check and baseline personnel vetting).
