Job Title: Community Producer (permanent NUJ contract)
About the Role
As a Community Producer, you’ll:
- Drive and moderate debates across theguardian.com, Guardian social platforms, and our newest editorial strand Conversations, ensuring diverse discussions thrive.
- Collaborate with journalists to shape questions, debates, and platforms for viewer interaction, spanning politics, global affairs, culture, and human endeavour.
- Serve as a guest-hosting editor, deepening audience engagement by acting as an on-screen presence for discussions across platforms.
- Monitor and manage reader comments on theguardian.com, ensuring compliance with community guidelines and editorial terms.
- Identify trends and potential news stories while supporting editorial planning and new initiatives.
- Advise editorial teams on user engagement challenges and best practices in comment moderation and discussion facilitation.
A hybrid role: three days in-office (Guardian HQ, King’s Cross, London), with options for flexible working.

Key Responsibilities
- Create Conversations articles alongside the Head of Community Engagement, reflecting a range of global perspectives.
- Lead online discussions, facilitating diverse viewpoints across politics, foreign policy, arts, and culture.
- Engage as a visible "host"—moderating discussions on-site (e.g., web chats) while fostering ongoing conversation across comment threads and emerging platforms.
- Monitor community activity to ensure constructive debate within boundaries—referring violations to experienced reviewers.
- Suggest news trends for editorial consideration by attending daily and weekly meetings.
- Liaise with editorial teams to resolve contentious issues and promote best practices.
- Promote Guardian values in reader engagement—respectful dialogue, accessibility, and critical thinking.
- Advise the editorial team on reader interactions, conflicts, and how to sustain open appraisals of journalism.

What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience managing online communities (e.g., forums, social media groups), with a nuanced understanding of audience behaviour and platform dynamics.
- Passion for news and current affairs, balancing transparency, cultural breadth, and ethical journalism.
- Deep familiarity with Guardian coverage—particularly across democracy, geopolitics, and human-centred stories.
- Abilities to:
- Engage a global audience with differing backgrounds;
- Assess discussions under UK libel laws and journalistic ethics;
- Navigate challenges (e.g., misinformation, trolling, polarising debates);
- Foster constructive dialogue while adhering to journalistic principles.
- Diverse perspective crucial:
- Each voice matters—we actively seek applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in media.
