Job Overview
We are looking for enthusiastic registered nurses from a variety of backgrounds and experience levels to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for any Registered Nurse who may consider applying for a SCPHN (School Community Public Health Nurse) programme and wishes to develop skills while gaining experience within a school nursing skill mix team.
Role Overview
Community Staff Nurses – School Nursing manage a school nursing caseload for a group of schools, supported and supervised by Band 6 SCPHN School Nurses within a large, diverse team. The service covers:
- Mainstream primary and secondary schools
- Pupil referral units
- Special schools across Harrow
Main Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive health needs assessments for clients, families, and communities
- Facilitate the mobilisation of appropriate resources to address identified needs
- Develop and maintain inter-agency/professional partnerships with statutory and voluntary organisations to deliver integrated care strategies for children, including safeguarding and child protection interventions
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, public health passion, and strong organisational abilities
- Maintain flexibility in service delivery and independent travel as required
- Essential: Must be a licensed car driver with access to a work-use car

Detailed Job Description and Responsibilities
Band 5 nurses contribute to service effectiveness by:
- Providing skilled, evidence-based nursing care aligned with organisational policies and procedures
- Supporting patients and families through:
- Assessment of risks and needs
- All stages of care planning
- Acting as patient advocates within multidisciplinary teams while overseeing colleagues to ensure quality, safe, and effective care
- Working autonomously as registered nurses—accountable for patient care while staying within personal competence and confidence levels
- Serving as an experienced practitioner who can provide tailored support
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential Criteria:
- Current NMC registration (any specialty: Adult, Child, Mental Health, or Learning Disability)
- Fit to practice and up-to-date with professional responsibilities
- Numeracy skills for safe medicine administration

Desirable Criteria:
- Evidence of relevant Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Skills in teaching and mentoring
Previous Experience
Essential Criteria:
- Previous experience as a Band 5 nurse or student nurse
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams
- Evidence of independent practice in past roles (e.g., managing caseloads without direct supervision)
- Ability to manage difficult situations and facilitate conflict resolution
Desirable Criteria:
- Community healthcare experience (previously as Band 5 nurse or healthcare support worker)
- Skills in facilitating multi-person discussions
- Safeguarding Children experience
- Health promotion experience
Skills and Knowledge
Essential Criteria:
- Clear communication with multidisciplinary teams, including:
- Presenting cases
- Taking notes and updating team members
- Effective face-to-face, telephonic, and written communication (reports, letters)
- Accurate, timely clinical recordkeeping (both electronic and handwritten), adhering to CNWL policies
- Professional demeanour while upholding NMC Code of Conduct
Other
Essential Criteria:
- Travel proficiency across multiple sites for the trust
- Full UK driving licence, with access to a car for work purposes
- Eligibility to work in the UK
