Job Summary

Our client was born in 1977. He experienced two significant injuries during his lifetime which has led to an acquired brain injury and spinal injury and he has been a wheelchair user since 2005. Our client lives in his fully adapted wheelchair accessible bungalow with his pet dog. His mother and father living locally. His interests include football, cooking, seeing his family and using his home gym.

He has support workers every morning and evening to provide practical hands-on support and encouragement and he has three sleeping night shifts a week provided at present, though this may be subject to change.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

The central role of the Community Support Worker is to assist our client with all aspects of care and support relating to his needs.

  • The Community Support Worker will also be expected to implement any daily therapeutic programmes that have been designed to promote his independence and physical strength by Health Professionals involved in his care.
  • The Community Support Worker has a general role in promoting the client’s care and autonomy in the home and community and it is essential that they can enable him to access the community by driving him in his wheelchair accessible vehicle.
  • The Community Support Worker will be expected to assist with domestic chores, such as cleaning and tidying rooms, ensuring equipment is clean and tidy, assisting with laundry, assisting with washing up, assisting with shopping, etc. It is essential that the Community Support Worker is prepared to assist with these tasks to ensure the smooth running of the support regime.
  • The Community Support Worker is expected to work cooperatively with our client, the Team Leader, the case manager, treating therapists and clinicians, other support workers in his team and our client’s family.

About You

It would be great to receive your application, if you have the following skills/behaviours:

  • Must be able to work with specialist equipment (training will be provided). A Handling Management Plan is available and is designed to reduce the risk of handling injuries.
  • You may be required to bend, kneel, squat push or lunge to ensure good posture during handling tasks.
  • Confident about working in client’s own home and sensitive to the needs and wishes of our client.
  • Happy to learn new things – hoisting, using gym equipment, personal care routine, etc. Training will be given.
  • Able to use own initiative and work flexibly.
  • Patient and tolerant.
  • Responsible.
  • Good sense of humour.
  • Cheerful, caring and positive attitude.
  • Reliable, trustworthy and a good communicator.
  • Confident with using I.T. to type notes and to research things if necessary.
  • Basic understanding of the principles of rehabilitation.
  • Proactive and encouraging approach to developing an appropriate range of activities.
  • Willing to participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Able to demonstrate a good understanding of the importance of maintaining confidentiality and to respect our client and their family's need for privacy.
  • Aptitude and desire to work with clients with complex needs.
  • Flexible i.e. with start and finish times according to the needs of our client.
  • Comfortable to be around a dog and to assist with looking after a dog (as our client has one small dog) including dog walking and clearing up after dog.
  • Drive the client in his wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Desirable:

  • Experience of working with adults with complex needs (this is preferred but enthusiasm, patience and willingness to learn is most important).
  • Ability to work additional hours at times, sometimes at short notice.
  • Previous experience of using specialist equipment with disabled people.
  • Basic knowledge of therapies, such as physiotherapy.
  • Previous experience of hoisting and use of specialist equipment with disabled people.
  • Experience of working with individuals who have a mental health disorder.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with people with a traumatic brain injury would be advantageous.
