Why HSBC
HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world. Guided by our purpose of opening up a world of opportunity, our ambition is to become the world’s most trusted bank globally, putting customers at the heart of everything we do.
The Role
The Compliance Director - Retail Lending role is an exciting opportunity within the HSBC UK Regulatory Compliance Team. You’ll manage a team of Regulatory Compliance officers covering secured and unsecured lending within Retail Banking and Wealth. The role also provides oversight of regulatory compliance activity relevant to First Direct and Marks and Spencers Bank. Success means giving clear advice to first line stakeholders, identifying and escalating key compliance risks and representing HSBC credibly with regulators and industry bodies.
This role gives you the platform to shape how Retail Banking and Wealth manages regulatory compliance across secured and unsecured lending. You’ll partner closely with relevant business and compliance teams to provide clear guidance and to ensure risks are identified and escalated early. You’ll also play a visible role in external engagements that matter to customers and the wider industry. If you want to make a practical impact through sound judgement and strong governance, we’d welcome your application.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
