USW Racing – CAD Engineer (Full-Time Extra-Curricular Role)

About the Team

USW Racing is the Formula Student Team of the University of South Wales, renowned for its innovation and engineering excellence in designing and constructing race cars. As a student-led initiative, the team competes globally, demonstrating cutting-edge engineering and design creativity.

Located in Pontypridd, USW Racing provides a collaborative, dynamic learning environment while advancing automotive and motorsport technologies. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a driven team, committed to excellence and hands-on skill development.

Role Responsibilities

As the Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Engineer, you will:

  • Develop, analyse, and refine 3D digital and physical designs for high-performance racing vehicles.
  • Use CAD software to create precise engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Optimise designs for functionality, performance, and durability.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, mechanical, and motorsport teams.
  • Ensure designs adhere to safety, technical, and competition standards.
  • Contribute to mechanical engineering solutions and enhance design methodologies.
  • Apply advanced EDA tools to refine CAD-based workflows.

Requirements

Technical Skills

  • Proven proficiency in Physical Design and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) (preferred software: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360, or equivalent).
  • Strong knowledge of Mechanical Engineering principles and forensic design applications.
  • Familiarity with automotive/motorsport engineering is an advantage.

Soft Skills & Competencies

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills with an aptitude for detailed technical work.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven project management and time-management skills to meet deadlines.
  • Enthusiasm for rapid prototyping, fabrication, and hands-on engineering.
