Conference Technician

We have a fantastic opening for a Maintenance Technician to join our Conventions team in Technical.

You’ll be working across our two convention centres, at the ICC in Birmingham City Centre and Vox on the NEC Campus in Solihull. These venues provide conference and meeting space for up to 8,000 delegates, welcoming over 350,000 delegates every year! And you’ll be part of a first-class team that is renowned for delivering incredible events.

About The Role

To undertake any work or projects as allocated as part of a professional team in the provision of technical services to events, whilst ensuring a high level of service is delivered at all events at the NEC GCC Venues, which includes the get ins, set ups and get outs.

  • Event Delivery primarily within smaller halls - work in close contact with the client and the client’s production company, and work from key written information supplied by the Production/Event Manager. The Conference Technician may work unsupervised but will also work as part of a team alongside other staff which may include freelancers.
  • To have a sound working knowledge of the ICC & VOX venues technical infrastructure, including equipment installation and patching system.
  • To take a proactive role in maintaining compliance with the legal framework of current Health & Safety regulations as they apply to production works practices and the maintenance and upkeep of departmental records.
  • Responsible for maintaining safe working practices during the build, open and de-rig of events.
  • Responsible for reporting all defects of equipment or the building structure via the Group Helpdesk / Technical Equipment Manager, to ensure that the standard of presentation and equipment is maintained at all venues.
  • To perform first line maintenance, storage and cleaning of all technical equipment as specified by the Senior Technician and Technical Manager.
  • Ensure that housekeeping is of an excellent standard and that the NEC Group equipment is not misused or misplaced. To keep all technical storage areas in a safe, clean and tidy condition & to positively drive the housekeeping standards across convention venues.
  • All Technical staff are required to be able to rig and operate a complete technical set up for a conference in all small halls excluding Hall 1, 3 & 4 this to include Sound, Lighting, AV and Staging.
  • Although this post is predominantly based at the ICC, the role is to deliver technical services across all convention venues.
  • To participate in all aspect of training and development as directed, and to use all relevant learning opportunities to improve personal skills to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the technical event delivery.

Skills and Experiences

  • Experience in all technical areas of expertise within the live event delivery i.e. - Sound, Lighting, AV and Staging.
  • Must display a positive and proactive attitude towards work and colleagues.
  • Strong customer focus and demonstrably proactive in approach – can do attitude.
  • Experience in a Live Event technical environment.
  • Operation and programming of Sound and Lighting equipment (both analogue and digital).
  • Experience of operating mobile access equipment.
  • Ability to make sound decisions quickly and efficiently.
  • Confident, articulate, and good communicator.
  • Computer literate with good working knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications.
  • A good basic level of numeracy and literacy.

About You
