Construction Manager / Clerk of Works (Contract)

Renewable Energy | Solar PV & Grid Infrastructure | North East UK

Our client is a growing renewable energy developer specialising in the financing, development and delivery of major renewable energy projects across the UK.

They are seeking an experienced Construction Manager / Owner's Site Representative / Clerk of Works to oversee the successful delivery of a large-scale Solar PV development and associated electricity network connections in the North East.

This is a site based contract role, offering the opportunity to play a key part in ensuring construction activities are delivered safely, compliantly and to the highest quality standards.

The Role

Acting as the client's representative on site, you will be responsible for monitoring construction activities, ensuring contractors deliver against programme, specification, quality and contractual requirements. This position would suit an experienced Construction Manager, Site Manager, Site Supervisor, Owner's Engineer Representative or Clerk of Works with a strong background in utility scale renewable energy or power infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the client's site representative throughout the construction phase.
  • Monitor and promote the highest standards of Health, Safety and Environmental compliance.
  • Ensure construction works are delivered in accordance with approved designs, specifications, ITPs and contractual obligations.
  • Undertake site inspections and quality audits to verify workmanship and compliance.
  • Identify, record and report non-conformances, defects and deviations from programme, design or contract requirements.
  • Support the implementation of corrective actions and monitor close-out of NCRs.
  • Produce detailed daily and weekly progress reports, including productivity tracking and programme forecasting.
  • Monitor contractor performance against project milestones and BOQ targets.
  • Facilitate effective communication between contractors, project teams, landowners and stakeholders.
  • Support executive, client and technical team site visits.
  • Capture and share lessons learned and best practice across the project team.

About You

We are particularly interested in candidates with a Construction Management, Site Supervision, Owner's Engineer or Clerk of Works background who have experience overseeing contractor activities on complex energy or utility projects.

Essential Experience

  • Min 5 years' experience in a site-based construction management, site supervision, Clerk of Works or owner's representative capacity.
  • Recent experience delivering Solar PV, BESS, utility, substation, ICP or electrical infrastructure projects within the UK.
  • Strong experience managing and overseeing EPC and principal contractors.
  • Working knowledge of high voltage transmission and distribution environments.
  • Solid understanding of CDM Regulations and construction compliance requirements.
  • Proven ability to monitor quality, identify defects and ensure works are delivered to specification.

Required Qualifications

  • HNC/HND or equivalent Level 4/5 qualification in a relevant engineering or construction discipline.
  • IOSH, NEBOSH or equivalent Health & Safety qualification.
  • CSCS Card (or equivalent).
  • Full UK driving licence.

Key Skills

  • Strong construction monitoring and quality assurance experience.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Commercial awareness and contractual understanding.
  • Ability to challenge contractors constructively whilst maintaining strong working relationships.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and project reporting tools.
  • Detail oriented, proactive and solutions focused.
