About the Role

You’ll gain hands-on experience supporting live tunnelling and trenchless projects while studying for your Quantity Surveying Technician qualification. This is an excellent opportunity to build a career in construction estimating and cost management with a respected specialist contractor.

  • Monday - Friday, 07:30 - 17:00 with 2 x 30-minute breaks.
  • 40 hours a week

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What You'll Do at Work

  • General duties including:
    • Assisting estimators and project managers with preparing budgets and cost plans for trenchless and tunnelling works
    • Gathering supplier and subcontractor quotations and building tender comparisons
    • Measuring drawings and quantities to support bid submissions
    • Maintaining databases of material, plant, and labour costs
    • Assisting in financial tracking and reporting on live projects
    • Helping to prepare client quotations, progress valuations, and cost summaries
    • Learning about commercial risk, procurement, and cost control in specialist civil engineering

What You'll Learn

Course Contents

  • Health and Safety: Apply health and safety issues to all activities.
  • Sustainability: Demonstrate application of the principles of sustainability.
  • Construction Technology: Assist in the implementation of the most appropriate solutions for construction projects.
  • Contracts: Be able to apply different types of contracts to different situations.
  • Procurement: Assist in the selection of and negotiation with specialist contractors for a construction project.
  • Cost control: Assist in the measurement and costing of construction works during a project.
  • Financial reporting: Assist in the preparation of financial reports, cash flow and cost forecasts for a construction project.
  • Administration: Assist in the collection, collation and storage of relevant data and its analysis.

Training Schedule

Training will be at Doncaster College, where you will access a wide range of facilities on offer.

Day Release

  • You will undertake the Construction Quantity Surveying Technician Level 4 Apprenticeship Standard.
  • You will undertake Functional Skills for English and/or maths if needed.

More Training Information

Essential Qualifications

  • GCSE in:
    • Maths/English (grade 4/C)
  • High IT competency in:
    • Excel, Word, Outlook (grade High competency)
  • Full or provisional UK driving licence in:
    • Full or provisional UK driving licence (grade Full or provisional UK driving)

Desirable Qualifications

  • Prior work-experience or interest in:
    • construction, engineering, or estimating (grade Prior work-experience/interest)
  • GCSE or Level 2 qualification in:
    • technical or business subject (grade Level 2)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

On completion, you could progress into a Junior Estimator, Assistant Quantity Surveyor, or Commercial Coordinator role within HB Tunnelling. With further experience and higher-level study, there is potential to advance toward more senior positions in the tunnelling and civil-engineering sector.
