About the Role
You’ll gain hands-on experience supporting live tunnelling and trenchless projects while studying for your Quantity Surveying Technician qualification. This is an excellent opportunity to build a career in construction estimating and cost management with a respected specialist contractor.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What You'll Do at Work
- General duties including:
- Assisting estimators and project managers with preparing budgets and cost plans for trenchless and tunnelling works
- Gathering supplier and subcontractor quotations and building tender comparisons
- Measuring drawings and quantities to support bid submissions
- Maintaining databases of material, plant, and labour costs
- Assisting in financial tracking and reporting on live projects
- Helping to prepare client quotations, progress valuations, and cost summaries
- Learning about commercial risk, procurement, and cost control in specialist civil engineering

What You'll Learn
Course Contents
- Health and Safety: Apply health and safety issues to all activities.
- Sustainability: Demonstrate application of the principles of sustainability.
- Construction Technology: Assist in the implementation of the most appropriate solutions for construction projects.
- Contracts: Be able to apply different types of contracts to different situations.
- Procurement: Assist in the selection of and negotiation with specialist contractors for a construction project.
- Cost control: Assist in the measurement and costing of construction works during a project.
- Financial reporting: Assist in the preparation of financial reports, cash flow and cost forecasts for a construction project.
- Administration: Assist in the collection, collation and storage of relevant data and its analysis.

Training Schedule
Training will be at Doncaster College, where you will access a wide range of facilities on offer.
Day Release
- You will undertake the Construction Quantity Surveying Technician Level 4 Apprenticeship Standard.
- You will undertake Functional Skills for English and/or maths if needed.
More Training Information

Essential Qualifications
- GCSE in:
- Maths/English (grade 4/C)
- High IT competency in:
- Excel, Word, Outlook (grade High competency)
- Full or provisional UK driving licence in:
- Full or provisional UK driving licence (grade Full or provisional UK driving)
Desirable Qualifications
- Prior work-experience or interest in:
- construction, engineering, or estimating (grade Prior work-experience/interest)
- GCSE or Level 2 qualification in:
- technical or business subject (grade Level 2)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other Requirements
- Must be 18+ (for insurance purposes).
- You must be able to travel to and from work and college.
- Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

After This Apprenticeship

On completion, you could progress into a Junior Estimator, Assistant Quantity Surveyor, or Commercial Coordinator role within HB Tunnelling. With further experience and higher-level study, there is potential to advance toward more senior positions in the tunnelling and civil-engineering sector.
