Construction Trades Lecturer

Department: Sustainable Construction and Building Services Salary: £34,789 to £48,394 per year Job Type: Full-time (35 hours per week), Permanent


About the Role

To contribute to achieving excellence in teaching and learning through innovative and excellent practice. You will be expected to:

  • Create effective and stimulating learning opportunities for all students through high-quality teaching, learning, and assessment.
  • Deliver teaching and learning on all levels, from Level 2 through to Level 5, as well as evening programmes.
  • Offer current and relevant industry/practitioner skills in specialist areas such as:
    • Mechanical engineering
    • Manufacturing engineering
    • Design engineering
    • Civil engineering
    • Quantity surveying

You will teach a range of professional engineering and construction units, including:

  • Theoretical, practical, and assessing skills
  • Innovation in professional engineering and construction curriculum development

Key Responsibilities

Technical Functions

  • Contribute fully to the College’s mission and values and ensure their effective implementation.
  • Engage in College and curriculum area strategic objectives and annual reviews.
  • Stay updated on national developments in your subject area through annual knowledge and skill refreshers.
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality lessons for effective learning management.
  • Use diverse and engaging teaching and learning techniques to foster student independence and autonomy.
  • Establish a motivating and inclusive learning environment where students feel safe, respected, and valued.
  • Maintain appropriate student behaviour, communication, and respect while challenging discrimination.
  • Set and mark work in compliance with College policies and track student progress and attendance.
  • Provide a balanced mix of teaching methods and experiences.
  • Participate in external/internal assessment procedures naturally.
  • Improve communication skills to overcome barriers.
  • Collaborate with leadership to design high-standard curricula, teaching approaches, and administrative support.
  • Address additional student English and Maths skill development needs alongside relevant colleagues.
  • Review professional development needs and actively participate in training.

Communication & Engagement

  • Communicate with parents, carers, and students during events such as Parents’ Evenings, Welcome Evenings, and Open Evenings.
  • Ensure all students adhere to College policies and procedures.
  • Provide engaging enrichment opportunities to enhance the student experience.

Professional Practice & Compliance

  • Uphold College values and ensure safe, professional working practices.
  • Comply with GDPR, DPA, and Safeguarding policies.
  • Support College-wide initiatives, particularly during peak enrolment and exam periods.
  • Undertake additional duties as required by the College.

Note: The role may evolve to include other responsibilities aligned with organisational needs.


Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise

Essential Criteria

  • Degree level qualification relevant to the subject area.
  • Relevant vocational Civil Engineering experience.
  • Recent teaching and assessing experience in professional construction courses.
  • A recognised teaching qualification, or commitment to completing one.
  • Strong understanding of modern professional construction provision.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum planning, development, and delivery in construction.
  • Excellent computer literacy and CPD commitment.
  • Minimum Level 3 literacy and numeracy skills, or willingness to complete relevant assessments.
  • High-level communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to set high standards for students and colleagues.
  • Familiarity with BIM/Revit.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in resource-based learning.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body.
  • Experience assessing student needs and developing curriculum enhancements, including Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL).
  • Understanding of employer training needs and their alignment with curriculum design.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and improvement processes.
