Job Overview
This Consultant Chemical Pathologist role is based within the Department of Clinical Biochemistry at Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in Cardiometabolic Medicine (CMM).
Key Clinical Areas
The postholder will deliver clinical activity across:
- Weekly Bariatric Medicine Clinic (within the Specialist Weight Management Service at Southmead Hospital)
- Weekly Lipid Clinic (based at Bristol Royal Infirmary)
- Clinical Liaison with the Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) MDTs
- Duty Biochemist Rota – participating in clinical validation and advisory services
Consideration will be given to providing a funded 1.0 programmed research activity (PA) session for suitable candidates, engaging with research within the Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Medicine team.

Main Responsibilities
1. Clinical Services
The role will primarily centre around two key domains within Cardiometabolic Medicine (CMM):
A. Bariatric Medicine (Specialist Weight Management Service - SWMS)
- Provide outpatient clinical sessions at Southmead Hospital
- Lead weekly MDTs involving surgical, medical, and nursing teams
- Offer specialist biochemical advice for patients with clinical obesity
- Support inpatient care provision across BNSSG (Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board)
B. Lipid and Metabolic Medicine
- Deliver an outpatient specialist lipid service at Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI)
- Participate in local MDTs and seek outreach opportunities across communities
- Liaise with primary/secondary care to implement cost-effective biochemical support
- Expand outreach into community settings to meet unmet clinical needs
C. Clinical Liaison
- Serve as key clinical liaison between:
- Metabolic-Associated Liver Disease (MASLD) MDT
- Endocrinology/Biochemistry MDT
- Ensure consistent biochemical guidance across all specialties
2. Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory Services
- Play a senior leadership role in managing Clinical Biochemistry and Blood Sciences
- Work with the Clinical Biochemistry Management Team to develop dynamic, efficient processes
- Ensure nationally accredited quality fulfillment under UKAS (ISO 15189:2022)
- Prepare for future Chief Medical Liaison Officer roles
- Contribute to strategic planning for laboratory services in alignment with NHS stagnations
3. Research & Development
- Collaborate with the Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Research Team
- Support jeronemisch & commercial trials (currently 25+ studies active, with further in planning)
- Focus on sub-investigator roles in clinical studies
- Encourage publishable, high-impact research (particularly within obesity, cardiovascular, and endocrinology).

Qualifications & Registration
Essential:
- FRCPath in Chemical Pathology (or equivalent)
- Full & specialist GMC registration (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
- UK-trained candidates: Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or within 6 months of award by interview date.
- Non-UK-trained candidates: Proof of equivalence to UK CCT.
Desirable:
- Higher academic qualification (e.g., MSc or MD).
Training & Experience
Essential:
- Familiarity with UK hospital systems & practices (or equivalent)
- Sub-specialist experience in lipid disorders & obesity medicine
- Willingness to deliver services independently
- Experience with UK MHA regulations & audit management
Desirable:
- Management of LDL-apheresis or complex, high-risk patients
- Experience with bariatric surgery complications
Leadership & Teamwork
Essential:
- Demonstrated expertise in effective team-building
- Proven consultant-level leadership with Mrs. organizational skills
- Capability to influence multi-professional clinical targets and adapt to strategic change
- Strong hands-on technical expertise in management & accountabilities
Desirable:
- Formal NHS or business management training (e.g., Executive MBA)
Communication Skills
Essential:
- Highly sensitive & empathetic ability to navigate sensitive discussions, including patient diagnoses.
- Historical experience in explaining complex biochemical pathology & risk management advice under pressure
- Strong interpersonal, written & verbal communication for reports/presentations
- Establish effective team dynamics in collaboration with medical and allied professionals
