Consultant Psychiatrist – West Midlands CAMHS Provider Collaborative (WMCPC)
Location: West Midlands (Work location to be confirmed, encompassing Oxford Academic Health Science Development and Birmingham Women's and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust)
About the Role
The Toucan West Midlands CAMHS Provider Collaborative (WMCPC) is seeking an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to provide medical leadership in transforming access to/from T4 (Therapeutic Communities) services in the West Midlands region.
This role involves delivering core psychiatric expertise within a multidisciplinary team, working closely with clinical nurse specialists and other healthcare professionals to improve care pathways for children and young people (CYP) with complex mental health needs.
You will join the IROC (Initial Reassessment for Ongoing Care) team, supporting the risk-based redeployment and discharge planning of Service Users referred from T4 or other secure services, ensuring a coordinated approach to psychiatric assessment, risk management, and transition to community-based care.
Key Responsibilities

Psychiatric Assessment & Treatment:
- Conduct psychiatric assessments for complex cases, including those with psychiatric and medical co-morbidities.
- Lead multi-disciplinary team (MDT) formulation of clinically complex cases, aligning with medical and psychiatric needs.
- Provide psychiatric input to assessments for patients who may be subject to deprivation of liberty under the Mental Health Act (MHA) Section 2/3.

Risk Management & Discharge Planning:
- Support inpatient-to-community transitions, maintaining strong links with secure/inpatient settings to:
- Prevent unnecessary admissions.
- Facilitate safe discharge planning in collaboration with the WMCPC team.
- Collaborate with residential teams to develop risk assessment and intervention strategies.

Team Leadership & Supervision:
- Offer clinical supervision to junior medical staff allocated to the team, facilitating professional development.
- Contribute to system-level mental health initiatives, ensuring best-practice standards across CYPMH services in the West Midlands.
- Act as a clinical and medical guardian within the Provider Collaborative, promoting national and local strategic goals.

Research & Development:
- Support WMCPC in clinical research, audit, and innovation, enhancing evidence-based care.

Mental Health Act (MHA) Compliance:
- Be approved under Section 12 (2) of the MHA, with the capacity to conduct MHA assessments as required.
About the Organisation – Birmingham Women’s & Children’s NHS Foundation Trust
Travel across the West Midlands and work will not be based in Birmingham Children’s Hospital or Birmingham Women’s Hospital, but in partnership with both.
You will support the WMCPC in together working to solve real-life problems in children’s mental health services, combining expertise across three primary skill areas:
- Transforming information technology use in CAMHS to aid in diagnosis and deciding best courses of treatment.
- Living and working with challenging behaviours to create a healthy environment for children and clinicians.
- Creating and maintaining quality systems of care by reinforcing good standards in clinical practice and ensuring levels of safety, fairness, and respect.
You will become part of a health innovation site, Buckingham Innovation and Research Centre. The BIC is not only a research site but an area in the Hospital designed to allow alternative working for patients and staff.

Requirements

Essential:
- GRP/RCGP-related registration or equivalent UK consultancy training.
- Approval or eligibility for Section 12 (2) MHA (or eligibility to apply).
- Demonstrated experience in child & adolescent psychiatry, with expertise in psychiatric risk assessment and management.
- Proficiency in formulation for complex cases, including psychiatric and medical co-morbidities.

- Experience in leading rehabilitation or secure services within CAMHS.
- Engagement with system-level transformational change in Child & Adolescent Mental Health.
- Familiarity with IROC (Initial Reassessment for Ongoing Care) models for broad triage.
