Consultant Clinical Oncology
Consultant in Clinical Oncology
with a Special Interest in Thoracic and Upper Gastrointestinal Malignancies
About the Role
The post holder will specialise in thoracic and upper gastrointestinal malignancies, with an advantage given to those showing an interest in teaching and staff training. Opportunities for research and/or education exist, including collaborations with Bangor and Wrexham Universities.
The successful applicant will contribute fully to the Consultant-led integrated specialist Oncology Service across North Wales, adapting to evolving service structures as new consultant roles are introduced. The job plan will accommodate thoracic and upper gastrointestinal tumour sub-sites, subject to negotiation.
Main Duties & Key Responsibilities

Specialist Oncological Care:
- Provide specialist oncological services to North Wales’ population, with a focus on common cancers and agreed subspecialty areas.
- Actively participate in multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) for each relevant subspecialty.

Collaborative Patient Care:
- Work closely with clinical consultant colleagues to ensure seamless cancer care for all patients.
- Coordinate care with colleagues in other divisions to facilitate smooth transitions during the patient journey.

Inpatient and Emergency Cover:
- Liaise with Haematology and Palliative Care teams to provide inpatient cover for Oncology patients.

Research and Clinical Governance:
- Develop and lead a clinical research interest, including participation in national/international studies.
- Foster collaborative initiatives with a commitment to clinical effectiveness and evidence-based medicine.

Education & Training:
- Engage in audit activities and continuing medical education (CME) initiatives.
- Hold responsibility for ensuring active CME participation among staff.

Job-Specific Requirements
Essential Criteria
Qualifications & Clinical Skills
- GMC Specialist Registration (or within 6 months of obtaining CCT by interview date)
- MB ChB or equivalent medical degree
- MRCP or equivalent

Experience
- Appropriate training in SpR/SR posts (or equivalent recognised by the Royal College of Physicians / GMC)
Desirable Criteria
Qualifications & Clinical Skills
- Higher degree or research qualification (advantageous)
Experience
- Teaching or clinical audit experience
- Leadership or clinical governance experience
Skills & Knowledge

- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with patients, relatives, and clinical staff
- Ability to gain trust and confidence in pressured situations
- Adaptability to change and pressure
- Evidence of published research (or equivalent contributions)
- Willingness to mentor junior staff and encourage research collaboration

- Leadership skills for directing/teaching medical, nursing, and allied health professionals
- Experience in leading multidisciplinary teams
- Advanced IT skills
