About the Role
Are you a Consultant in Clinical Oncology with a special interest in thoracic and upper gastrointestinal malignancies? We’re seeking a passionate and flexible candidate to join us in delivering high-quality cancer care across North Wales.
The role will include:
- Subspecialty care in thoracic and upper gastrointestinal oncology—duty rotas will reflect this scope.
- Active participation in multidisciplinary cancer teams across North Wales.
- Collaboration with colleagues to ensure seamless patient transitions and holistic care.
- Opportunities for research, teaching, and clinical education, in partnership with Bangor and Wrexham Universities.
- A commitment to modernising and evolving cancer services alongside colleagues as new roles are established.
A teaching and mentorship mindset is considered an advantage. The role requires flexibility as the service scales and develops in response to regional medical needs.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Service Provision
- Lead and deliver specialist oncological services for the North Wales population, with an emphasis on thoracic, upper gastrointestinal, and common cancers.
- Work integratedly within multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) to ensure evidence-based, patient-centred treatment.
- Establish seamless coordination between oncology, haematology, and palliative care services—including inpatient cover responsibilities.
- Contribute to site-specific oncology research and trial participation, engaging with national and international clinical studies.
Education, Research, and Quality Improvement
- Develop and keep up-to-date with specialist knowledge in thoracic and upper gastrointestinal malignancies.
- Actively participate in Continual Medical Education (CME) and ensure medical staff compliance with training requirements.
- Lead clinical audits and themes important to the local service.
- Cultivate a collaborative teaching culture, mentoring junior doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.

Collaboration & Service Development
- Cooperate with GP practices, specialist physicians, and perioperative teams to optimise the patient’s journey.
- Ensure clinical excellence and effective process improvement in alignment with high standards of evidence-based medicine.
- Flexible engagement with service enhancements, particularly in areas of state-of-the-art technology, emerging therapies, and integrated care pathways.

Essential & Desirable Criteria
Qualifications & Competence
✅ Essential:
- GMC Specialist Registration (or within 6 months of achieving Completion of Training/CCT by interview date).
- MB ChB or equivalent primary medical qualification.
- MRCP or equivalent membership.
✦ Desirable:
- Higher Degree (e.g., MSc, MD, PhD).
- Research experience, including publication history .

Experience
✅ Essential:
- Training experience as a Specialty Registrar/Seniior Registrar (SpR/SR) in Oncology.
- Equivalent training recognised by the Royal College of Physicians or GMC.
✦ Desirable:
- Clinical audit and quality improvement experience.
- Leadership experience within teaching, governance, or service planning contexts.
- Clinical governance involvement (e.g., incident reporting, risk management).
Soft Skills & Attributes
✅ Essential:
- Strong interpersonal skills—able to gain patient/relative trust within multidisciplinary environments.
- Resilience under pressure, adaptability to change.
- Emphasis on ethical medical practice aligned with BCUHB’s core values.
- Commitment to CME and personal development.
✦ Desirable:
- Late-stage Welsh language competencies (formal interview questions may be Welsh language-based).
- Excellent IT skills for patient care, documentation, and research.
- Experience leading MDT discussions, diversely staffed teams, and other allied health professionals.
