Consultant Colorectal Surgeon
Senior Consultant Surgeon – Lower GI (Colorectal Surgery) (Full Time or Part Time Available)

About the Role
The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) invites applications from experienced Full-Time or Part-Time Substantive Consultant Surgeons with a speciality in Lower GI (Colorectal) Surgery to join our vibrant team at Ysbyty Gwynedd and Llandudno General Hospital.
Candidates with additional expertise in Robotic-Assisted Surgery (versus system) are particularly encouraged to apply, as there are opportunities for development in this area.
While the initial job plan is designed for a full-time, 10-session working week, we welcome applications from candidates interested in a flexible or part-time arrangement. The successful appointee will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality colorectal surgical services in conjunction with an engaged, multidisciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities
The following duties are indicative, but roles may evolve according to service needs. Successful candidates will be expected to align with colleague expectations while contributing as a senior clinical leader.
Clinical Duties & Operational Accountabilities
- Deliver first-class clinical services across in-patient and outpatient specialties, supporting the hospital’s planned activity targets.
- Engage in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings, fostering collaboration between surgeons, clinicians, and departmental staff.
- Maintain rigorous clinical standards, earning regulatory compliance through:
- Regular clinical audits
- Evidence-based research and quality improvement initiatives
- Continuous appraisal and performance monitoring
- Expectations in medical education remits:
- Guardianship of surgical trainee development (academic and technical curricula), including:
- Tutorial sessions
- Clinical guidance / mentorship
- Assessment and appraisal
- Active participation in undergraduate teaching:
- Clinical placements for North Wales, Cardiff, and Swansea medical students.
- Co-ordination and delivery of teaching programmes at North Wales Medical School.
- Guardianship of surgical trainee development (academic and technical curricula), including:
- Establish an annual job plan (in discussion with the General Manager and Clinical Director).
- Participate in annual appraisal & consistent liaison with Kollegen.
- Ensure full administrative duty on patient care, case review, and governance documentation.

Essential Qualifications
- FRCS (or equivalent) in Lower GI/Colorectal Surgery or respective internationally recognised specialisation.
- Full GMC Specialist Registration and, where applicable, CCT within 6 months of completion (date verified at interview stage).
Desirable Qualifications
- Royal College Surgeons’ Train the Trainer recognition
- Formal Leadership Qualification (e.g. PG Cert. in Healthcare Management)
Essential Clinical & Organisational Experience
- Proven specialist colorectal surgical experience with a demonstrated record in:
- General surgery (tertiary to complex Colorectal care)
- Familiarity with NHS operational and governance frameworks.
- A commitment to evidence-based research and clinical audit participation.

Desirable Clinical Specifications (for Innovation-Focused Candidates)
- Formal accreditation in colonoscopy and advanced endoscopy.
- Experience in rectal cancer resections (low/sphincter-preserving techniques).
- Hand-on Versus Robotic Surgery System (RSS) training / clinical deployment record.
- Opt-out Welsh Government healthboards experience.
Team & Collaborative Skills
- Inter-disciplinary working: Collaborating with MDTs / hosptials networks, including North-West Wales Public Meeting Centres.
- Leadership & mentorship within surgical speciality.
Audit & Research Contributions
- Essential: Evidence of audit participation and relevant research engagement.
- Desirable: Completed publishable audit projects or peer-reviewed research involvement.
Teaching & Education Engagement
- Guidebook as Senior Clinical Lecturer in Colorectal Surgery.
- Proven undergraduate teaching at medical ground level.
- Desirably:
- Experience as medical school senior clinical lecturer.
- Certificated MedEd or equivalent training (Outcomes-based education programme).
Non-Clinical Professional Skills
- Driving authorship commitment with joint-professional growth commitment.
- Flexibility in professional recesses (e.g. annual leave, trainee handovers).
- Welsh language (Ability to converse OR demonstrated commitment to develop语言 capability).
