Consultant Colorectal Surgeon
Full-Time Substantive Consultant Surgeon (Lower GI/Colorectal Surgery)
Job Overview
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board wishes to appoint a Full-Time Substantive Consultant Surgeon with expertise in Lower GI (Colorectal) Surgery to join a busy Department of Surgery based at Ysbyty Gwynedd and Llandudno General Hospital.
We are recruiting a consultant with the option for alternative part-time hours for successful candidates. The successful appointee must provide a high-quality clinical service within a well-supported multidisciplinary team.
There are opportunities to develop Robotic (Versius) Assisted Colorectal Resection skills for candidates with relevant experience.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical Duties & Professional Obligations
- Resilience, adaptability, and willingness to bolster service recovery during challenging periods.
- Maintain a high-quality service aligned with hospital targets for inpatient and outpatient services.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to optimise patient care.
- Ensure evidence-based practice through:
- Regular clinical audit participation
- Evidence-based research activities
- Annual appraisal & performance reviews
- Familiarity with and contribution to Royal College training curricula, including:
- Tutoring residents
- On-the-job mentoring and assessments
- Proactive training development
- Mentor and educate medical students from:
- North Wales Medical School
- Swansea Medical School
- Cardiff Medical School
- Active role in planning and delivering undergraduate education at North Wales Medical School.
- Collaborate with General Manager, Clinical Director, and Lead Clinician to agree and review an annual job plan.
- Perform all administrative duties vital to patient care and operational excellence.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Accreditations
(Essential criteria unless otherwise noted)
✅ FRCS (or overseas equivalent) in Colorectal Surgery ✅ Full GMC Specialist Registration, or within 6 months of obtaining CCT (at interview)
Desirable Criteria
❯ Royal College of Surgeons – "Train the Trainer" module ❯ Formal Leadership & Management Qualification
Experience
Essential
🔹 Comprehensive experience in all aspects of General Surgery 🔹 Proven specialist Colorectal training & clinical experience 🔹 Understanding of NHS management principles - theory and practical application
Desirable
❯ Colonoscopy accreditation ❯ Experience in Low Rectal Cancer resections ❯ Training/experience with CM Reviti Versius Robotic Surgery (Colorectal) ❯ Postgraduate Leadership & Management training ❯ Prior experience working within Welsh healthcare (NHS Wales)
