About the Role
Are you ready to join a team of passionate ecologists and shape the future of environmental conservation? AECOM’s Nature team is growing across key locations:
- UK: Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle (flexible hybrid working)
- Ireland: Dublin (remote/onsite roles may apply)
Innovation drives our work. As a Consultant Ecologist, you’ll collaborate on diverse projects—from large-scale infrastructure in energy, water, renewables, defence, and transport to local biodiversity initiatives. Your role will push ecological boundaries through groundbreaking survey techniques, regulatory assessments, and mentorship in Biodiversity Net Gain.
Key Responsibilities
- Fieldwork & Surveys:
- Conduct desk-based and field-based surveys for habitats, botanical, protected, and invasive species.
- Lead Phase 1 Habitat/NVC surveys, protected species surveys (e.g., bats/dormice), and wildwife assessments.
- Data & Reporting:
- Analyse, evaluate, interpret ecological data to produce Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA).
- Develop mitigation strategies and design solutions for sustainable projects.
- Project Leadership:
- Lead Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRAs).
- Mentor teams in Biodiversity Net Gain, skill-building, and project management.
- Construction Support:
- Act as an Ecological Clerk of Works on-site to ensure environmental compliance.

Prerequisites & Requirements
Are you passionate about ecology? Here’s what we’re looking for:
- Experience in ecology roles (public/private sector), with demonstrated survey design/coordination and fieldwork leadership.
- Legal & Policy Knowledge: Deep familiarity with UKEC wildlife legislation, the Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) process, and Welsh-specific regulations.
- Technical Proficiency:
- Expertise in botanical identification and Phase 1 Habitat Surveying.
- Experience with protected species surveys (e.g., bats, dormice).
- Adaptability:
- Willingness to manage fluctuating workloads (including occasional unsociable hours, overnight, or extended-site deployments).
- Communication:
- Strong report-writing skills, with proven ability to provide ecological advice to clients and stakeholders.
